2. Internet Differential Equations Activities: Bungee Jumping

http://www.sci.wsu.edu/idea/Bungee/bungee2.html
Bungee Jumping
This exercise requires the solution of linear second order equations. Maximum and minimum values of parameters must be found to allow a person to survive a jump. The meaning of zeros of the solution and its derivative, as well as the effect of a nonlinear term , are discussed qualitatively. Suppose that you are a bungee jumper, standing on a bridge somewhere in Colorado. Three hundred feet below you, a lovely little stream meanders through a scenic canyon. The lovely stream is six inches deep, and has lots of sharp pointy rocks in it. You have brought a variety of cords with which to secure your feet, ranging in stiffness from a steel cable to a soft rubber band. Every one of the cords is exactly 160 feet long, when hung from the bridge. If you choose a cord that is too stiff, then your body will no longer form a connected set after you hit the end of the cord. On the other hand, if you choose one that is too soft, your body may still be moving for a short time after you pass the point 300 feet below where you are standing. Which cord should you choose, if any? This physical system was studied by famous bungee jumper Robert Hooke about 300 years ago. Hooke's Law states that the force exerted on your body by the cord is proportional to the distance of your body past the

THE STUDY OF ORDINARY differential equations is a core element of any curriculum in engineering, computer science, or the physical sciences. This proposal addresses the need for increased emphasis on computational methods in differential equations education by establishing a World Wide Web server that will provide materials to instructors and students.
These materials will be primarily computer-based examples illustrating analysis of physical and biological systems using differential equations, and software for use in conjunction with them. Provision will be made for submissions of exercises for electronic publication on the server. The ultimate objective is to provide a repository for instructional materials illustrating computational approaches in the study of differential equations. Abstract
IDEA is a "virtual dynamic lab book" on the World Wide Web illustrating applications of differential equations in a wide variety of disciplines. Activities are being developed by us and contributions are being accepted from individuals at other institutions. IDEA provides users with internal and external tools to explore these activities mathematically.
I. Project Overview
The tremendous growth of the World Wide Web (WWW) in recent years has been prompted by individuals and groups wishing to share their message with a large audience at minimal cost. The increased use of the Internet has spawned equally astounding growth in the number of materials and tools available to Web site developers. From a mathematics education perspective, both of these factors provide us with new tools for the development of activities that demonstrate the utility and methods of mathematics to our students. The continually increasing number of WWW sites provides us with easy access to ideas and data from which we can develop material, and the development of new tools provides us with useful and exciting ways to disseminate our materials. In this paper we focus on the undergraduate differential equations curriculum and discuss one project that attempts to deliver these tools to instructors and students. IDEA , or I nternet D ifferential E quations A ctivities, is an NSF funded project whose goal is the development of an "interactive virtual lab book" for differential equations at the undergraduate level. The goals of

Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Technology This is a collection of links gleaned from the WWW and from colleagues and graduate students at UNC. I have not checked them out thoroughly. Some of them look superb, and others may be of questionable value. I have added my first impressions with the links. There does not seem to be many sites devoted to linear algebra. If you find more, let me know. There are a few scattered ones using Maple or Mathematica that are not listed here.
Please check them out and send me comments. Ultimately I will winnow (and extend) the list and add more incisive comments, with your help.

Supported by NSF and Brookes-Cole. Has java software to run the applications. Now has 9 projects, mostly done? Has a "java code generator" to help in writing applets. The second package is a more sophisticated graphics package for Microsoft Windows machines. It is called DynaSys. It is posted in a self-extracting compressed form (using PKZIP 2.04). The file is smaller than 200KB.
DynaSys can perform the following tasks.

Revolutions in Differential Equations
Exploring ODEs with Modern Technology
by Michael J. Kallaher
Reviewed by Jan E. Holly
A revolution is rumbling through the teaching of differential equations. Computers are beginning to inundate the classroom, and courses are changing in response to the availability of software. Although computers have been used for a long time in differential equations courses, the last few years has seen an explosion in software written specifically for such classes and textbooks focusing on graphical methods. Hence, the mainstream now follows the revolutionists. To incorporate computers fully into a course, the structure of the course, and possibly the classroom itself, must be revamped. The topic of class structure is treated well in this volume. West, especially, gives many ideas and suggestions on how to incorporate computer exercises and projects, including helpful hints on assigning, grading, and presenting results of student work. Boyce, also, discusses class structure, advocating the "studio course" in which students have access to computers at all times in the classroom. The revolution is worth joining, and this volume is worth having, for anyone who teaches differential equations. Although the reader may wish for a better catalogue and review of software, or a longer list of relevant books (no-one mentions as part of the revolution, for example, the excellent textbook

Exam, Quiz, Activity, Homework, and Grading Policies Grading
Your total points for the class will consist of reading and homework assignments, reading and homework quizzes, activities, four exams and a class project. They will count toward your grade as follows:
Homework Quizzes/Activities Exams 4 @ 100 pts each Project Total Grades will be based on the students work and understanding of the material presented during the semester as demonstrated through classroom and group participation as well as the above points. Homework
Assignments will be made almost daily. The homework will be due 2 class days after it is assigned. Some time will be set aside at the beginning of class to discuss the previous day's homework. Homework will not be discussed the day it is due. Each homework assignment is worth 5 points. The homework will be graded according to the following criteria:
  • 5 points : All work completed correctly in a neat and organized manner showing all work. 4 points : All problems attempted in a neat and organized manner showing all work with no more that 3 incorrect. 3 points : All problems attempted in a neat and organized manner showing all work with more than 3 incorrect answers.

The Scientific Notebook
You will need to use the Scientific Notebook to read the files on this site. You can also view the files with the Scientific Workplace . You can download viewer software that will allow you to view Scientific Notebook files online. There is no charge for the viewer. You can also download a time-locked, 30-day free trial sample of the Scientific Notebook . There is no charge for the first 30 days, but the software will no longer function beyond the 30-day time limit.

Configuring Communicator 4.5 to Read Scientific Notebook Files
If Communicator is not configured to read Scientific Notebook files, when you click on a Scientific Notebook file, Communicator will attempt to help you with configuration. Usually, you will be queried with an Unknown File Type dialog. If so, click the Pick App... button. Click the Browse button and browse to the directory containing the Scientific Notebook installation and select the file Scinoteb.exe. Click OK. You will then be asked if you want to Open the file or Save to disk. Select open. From this point forward, you should not have to repeat the process. Communicator is now configured to recognize Scientific Notebook files.
