    Overview
The United States identity has been created from the contributions of a diverse population. This lesson explores the diversity in our county. Many people admire the fact that many diverse people were involved in the creation of the United States. These people bring with them their unique backgrounds of their ancestry, belief systems, and ideology. By researching a historical figure that influenced our national identity in a significant way, students will begin to appreciate how important the contributions are from diverse individuals.

"Exploring Diversity" What your materials inspired me to think of is teaching a unit at the begining of the school year on diversity and the many different cultures that make up the United States of America. Teaching this unit on diversity and different cultures would emphasize that being different is what makes us all special and makes the United States so great. This would help any ESOL students feel more welcome and accepted in the classroom. In particular I thought that I could have the students all find out one culture that makes up their family's background and then study that country in terms of finding out a couple facts. This would help students learn more about their cultural background and it would also help educate the class. I also thought that the classroom could have a big world map and students could connect a picture representing them in Florida to a point in the country their family is from. This would help our class see where all of our families are orginally from. Maybe even have a dinner with the cultures of the world that students and their families would be invited to, and each student would bring a food from their culture.

Part 2: Developing Global Perspectives Grades 3-5 Grades 6-9 Grades 10-12 First Impressions ... Good News/Bad News/Who Cares? Part 2: Developing Global Perspectives We got to the town where we would do our training for the next three months, and I wondered where all the houses were because all I could see were garages, or what I thought were garages. The houses were very different from what my concept of a house was. There were no yards on the outside like I had grown up with in Minnesota. -Monica Fitzgerald People expected Americans to behave in a certain way. They expected all Americans to be blonde. They have a lot of U.S. movies and videos. . .people always expected Americans to be rich. -Jean Deal Although late 20th century advances in transportation and communications promise a smaller, more accessible world, we each perceive that world through the filters of our individual experiences and cultural development. Still, cross-cultural contact is a fact of our local, national, and global lives. It is more important than ever that each of us develop an inclusive global perspective that celebrates diversity and promotes tolerance. The experiences of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers like Monica Fitzgerald and Jean Deal illustrate the dual mission of the Peace Corps: to teach and to learn. A Volunteer learns quickly that her view of the world will be challenged daily by the unfamiliar. By living and working alongside host country residents, Volunteers also have the opportunity to demonstrate the diversity of American culture. The stories of Returned Volunteers are stories of adaptation and acceptance, of how to be at home anywhere in the world (see

TSW: Involve parents or guardians in the classroom community through family homework assignments. Day 1: Tie to previous information. Last time we talked about everyone’s different intelligences and contributions to class. What other ways are we different? One difference is that we all have different family stories. Teacher tells his or her own family story—where parents are from, how they came to the US, how they came to Phoenix. Students’ homework is to go home and interview a family member about their own family story, finding out specific countries of origin, narratives, and symbols that represent their history.

    Title - Classroom Diversity
    By - JoAnne Harmon
    Primary Subject - Social Studies
    Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - Preschool - Grade 3 This would be a great icebreaker at the beginning of a new school year, and especially if you have multi ethnic children. At the first open house, or at orientation, have a large map of the world hanging for everyone to see. Ask the parents to take a pushpin and pinpoint where their ancestors or they themselves came from in the world. Then use each country as a social studies lesson, and even ask the parents or family member to come in and talk a little about that country. Include books, maps, brochures and even food native to that area. The children will have a great time sampling the different foods and seeing the countries in the maps and brochures. They will hear first hand about that country ( things not often mentioned in textbooks). and it will make the lesson more memorable. This lesson could be adapted for reading classes also.
