In class, we read about and discussed four groups of people living in Jerusalem, i.e., Yemenites, Moroccans, Christian Arabs, and 'Modern Israelis' who had been living in Israel over several generations. Using our class textbook and enrichment materials provided by the Bureau of Jewish Education, we compared and contrasted the following elements of each cultural group; history and nature of their immigration to Israel, traditional foods in daily life and in celebrating special events, traditional clothing (again, in daily life and in special life-cycle celebrations), music of that culture, and customs and/or folklore specific to each group. For the first 2 weeks, the class studied all 4 cultures together. We then broke into 4 groups, each group further researching one of the above mentioned cultures. By contacting friends, relatives, and community leaders, and then researching via Internet and in libraries, we gathered pictures, found recipes, acquired musical tapes, and recreated the people who would represent each culture.
