Drink driving laws
This page provides information about drink driving in the Australian Capital Territory
The Australian Capital Territory's drink driving laws reinforce the message that drink driving is a serious offence, one that can result in a jail sentence. If the police charge you with a drink-driving offence, the matter will be dealt with by the courts. The option of an on-the-spot fine has been removed. You should obtain legal advice before you attend court.
Licence cancellations
  • If the courts find you guilty of exceeding the prescribed blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level, your licence may be cancelled. The courts may cancel your licence for a specified period of time. After that period has expired you may apply to the Road Transport Authority for another licence.
Probationary licences
Compulsory blood sampling
  • If you are 15 or older and you are involved in a traffic accident for which you require hospital treatment, you may have a blood sample taken by hospital staff.

    21 ISSUES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR IMPROVING HIGHWAY AND AUTO SAFETY
IN THE 21st CENTURY THE VEHICLE IMPROVE OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION IN FRONTAL CRASHES To improve occupant crash protection in frontal crashes, NHTSA should add a high-speed offset frontal crash test requirement, increase the speed required for frontal crash tests, require that each new passenger vehicle be equipped with seat belt pre-tensioners and load-limiters in the front seat, that rear seat belts be adjustable, and that the agency adopt new methods to remind occupants to use seat belts. MAKE PASSENGER VEHICLES MORE COMPATIBLE WHEN THEY CRASH To reduce the lethal effect of impacts NHTSA should develop safety countermeasures to improve front end and side impact energy management in smaller vehicles, develop approaches to modulate the height, weight, and general aggressive character of large vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and require improved active and passive occupant restraint systems in cars. PREVENT VEHICLE ROLLOVER NHTSA must establish a new standard to govern dynamic stability performance and rollover for passenger vehicles under real-world operating conditions. NHTSA must also develop a dynamic rollover test that comports with real-world experience, to improve the comparative information provided to consumers on vehicle rollover. In addition, the agency should require improved padding on vehicle interiors, an upgrade of the current standard for door latch/hinge performance, and innovative anti-ejection glazing materials.

Cell-Phone Ban Not a Good Call
By Lauren Weinstein Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
02:00 AM Dec. 09, 2002 PT Is using a cell phone while driving really as dangerous as driving drunk? The emotions and politics of the driving while yakking debate have been among the most contentious in the technology arena. It's rife with anecdotal tales, questionable statistics and, in general, a lack of meaningful and unbiased data.

Politicians rarely disappoint us when we look for unrealistic approaches to technology issues, and they're true to form when it comes to DWY. Across the United States and around the world, politicos have been jumping on anti-cell-phone bandwagons. The predominant approach is to ban most handheld cell-phone use by drivers, despite laws often already on the books banning any form of distracted driving.

"We should have you on the ground in Boston in 15 to 20 minutes," the pilot announced as the flight attendants collected the last cups and napkins. "And remember: the most dangerous leg of your journey is the ride home from the airport. So buckle up and drive carefully." That's great advice I received recently from someone who knows a lot about safe travel. While many travelers worry about flying , we take for granted the danger we face whenever we get behind the wheel, or we are in the backseat of a cab. Terrorist attacks, hijackings, strange bacteria and rare viruses all tend to make more interesting headlines than a cab wreck near some lonely airport. And, yet every day travelers are injured or killed in automobile accidents. I'm not aware of any statistics proving that travelers face an increased risk of automobile accidents relative to their risk at home; but automobile accidents are one of the most common ways travelers are injured, particularly international travelers. It makes sense that when you're driving on unfamiliar roads with a strange rental car, your risk of missing a turn is probably higher than when you're at home. So, please add driving to the long list of tasks you must attend to carefully on your next trip. Listed below are some specific ideas and suggestions - many of which are simple common sense. When it comes to vehicular safety, knowing what to do is the easy part.

December 26, 2002 COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a British overseas territory, part of the British West Indies, lying about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico. There are about 50 islands in the BVI, many of them uninhabited. Tortola is the chain's main island; other islands include Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: For tourist stays of up to six months, U.S. citizens need a U.S. passport or other proof of U.S. citizenship (original or certified birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship) as well as photo identification, onward or return tickets, and sufficient funds for their stay. Upon initial entry, no more than 30 days will be granted. At the end of 30 days, visitors must report to the Immigration Department's main office in Road Town for an extension. Extensions of up to 90 days are issued at the discretion of the Immigration Officer subsequent to an interview. For further information, travelers should contact the BVI Department of Immigration at (284) 494-3471. There is a departure tax payable upon leaving the BVI. This tax varies according to the mode of travel. In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry/departure.
