Life Education Australia Unique Unique In 1985, the founder of Life Education Australia, Rev. Ted Noffs, said "In the whole world, there will never be another you. You are unique!". He then quoted Pablo Casals, the Spanish composer, "what do we teach our children, that two and two are four? and that Paris is the capital of France? - but when do we teach them: Do you know who you are? You are a marvel, you are unique - there has never been another child like you." That concept of uniqueness - our specialness, underlines all that Life Education is about. We want to value our most precious resource, our children, and we want them to value themselves. When people have a sense of self-worth they are not easily manipulated, conned or cajoled into harmful drug use. We teach them about health, we teach about things that can harm them - legal and illegal drugs, then we equip them with the power to choose that which will honour the value they put on themselves - why?

How to help a friend with drug addiction:
  • Seek help from your school counselor and ask your counselor if there is a drug education program that you and your friend can participate in. Set a positive example and let your friend know how much you care for him/her and let your friend feel that he/she can count on you for support. Try to educate yourself more on the consequences of drug abuse by going to your schoolÕs library for more information. *Get a pamphlet or newspaper article that shows a story on the consequences of drug abuse and clearly talk about it with your friend. *Try to be a good listener and see what things could influence your friend to take drugs. Give your friend a list of support groups and a phone number where he/she can call for help.
Why your friend may have chosen to do drugs:
  • Pressure from peers or drug dealers Relieve boredom Feel good Forget about their troubles and relax Have fun Satisfy their curiosity Take risks Ease their pain Feel grown up Show their independence Belong to a specific group Look cool
People that are more at risk of becoming addicted to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs:

But there has to be a balance between fun and learning. Ruth Ruthven of The Big Idea Inventor Centre has a view how to achieve that balance. Having taken the step to leave the teaching profession after a career in primary education, I welcomed the opportunity to widen my horizons in Glasgow Science Centre. Here we would develop, monitor and evaluate educational programmes. These include science shows, workshops and structured trails around interactive exhibits. They're all specifically aimed at pupils and have the curriculum at the forefront, addressing key learning outcomes across a wide subject/skill-based spectrum. They're developed in partnership with teachers and the Centre's education and science staff to help teachers deliver activities which would otherwise be too costly or challenging to undertake in schools. Enhancing the curriculum and school-based teaching, the motivational aspect of all programmes is also a key outcome. But there are two schools of thought within the science world concerning the use of the exhibits in science centres. Let me explain:

Putting Educational Assessments to the Test
Student performance on standardized tests increasingly affects not only an individual's academic future, but also the standing of teachers, schools, and school districts. Currently, 48 states employ statewide testing; in addition, school districts often have their own programs. And the recently approved education bill requires annual reading and mathematics tests for students in grades three through eight, which will affect how federal aid is allocated and spent. Such standardized tests are used for everything from shaping curricula to determining who will graduate from high school. But many educators, policy-makers, and parents question whether current assessment practices really are helping all students succeed in school. Advances in the scientific understanding of how people learn and how to measure learning can lead the way to developing new, more effective assessments for both large-scale and classroom uses, says a National Research Council committee in its report Knowing What Students Know: The Science and Design of Educational Assessment Policy-makers need to recognize the limitations of current testing and assessment methods. Four decades of research on how children learn offer good direction for how assessment tools should be revamped to enable more valid and fair inferences about students' levels of understanding, their thinking strategies, and why misunderstandings occur.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 1, 2001 GOVERNOR AND MRS. RYAN ANNOUNCE NEW STATEWIDE YOUTH DRUG PREVENTION CAMPAIGN SPRINGFIELD Governor George H. Ryan and Illinois First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan today announced the State of Illinois' Futures for Kids program is developing "Be Real", an innovative, MTV-style youth alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention initiative. Be Real uses a variety of cutting-edge education, marketing and media tactics to target an age group usually ignored by traditional drug prevention campaigns - 10 to 14 year olds. The Be Real campaign is an integrated social marketing program that focuses on encouraging Illinois' youth to recognize they are cool and hip for "being real" to themselves - drug-free. This first-of-its-kind youth prevention program has teamed with the Illinois Drug Education Alliance (IDEA) to make Be Real the theme of Illinois' well-established Red Ribbon Week, October 22 - 28, 2001. "Along with our IDEA partners, Futures for Kids has teamed up with schools, youth and community groups and faith-based organization throughout the state. These essential relationships strengthen our joint mission of getting Illinois' youth to recognize that most of their peers are not doing drugs," said Governor George Ryan. "Unlike other drug prevention programs, Be Real focuses on the positive things kids are doing in their lives to help them remain drug-free." Leading up to Be Real week in October, more than 7,000 toolkits will be delivered to public and private school principals and teachers, as well as thousands of youth group leaders in Illinois to help them coordinate Be Real activities in their communities. Teachers and youth leaders will show students through Be Real activities how rewarding it is to "be real" to themselves, their families and friends, their communities and their dreams - alcohol, tobacco and drug-free."

http://www.acde.org/educate/Default.htm
Drug prevention education is more than teaching the facts about drugs it is teaching children and youth about themselves, what is possible in their life now, and what is possible for the future. How the subject is taught is at least as important, and perhaps more important, than what is taught. Because many parents do not talk with their children about the dangers of drug use, educators are often left to fill the void. Teachers can help students learn the complete story about drugs , balancing the misinformation youth generally receive about drugs from their friends, the street and the media.
Facts for Educators has been designed to help you in this challenging role. We hope that the information that you find here will support your efforts in the classroom.
