Part one of this research consisted of a formative study in order to consult with parents regarding the design and process of the intervention to be implemented in Part 2. Part two of this research investigated the feasibility and impact of offering parents a choice of home-based drug education materials. There were 20 primary schools, 72 Year 6 teachers and almost 1500 Year 6 students and their parents who participated in the part two of this research. Baseline surveys were administered to students and parents in all 20 schools. The response rate from parents was 90%. Experts calls for drug education for parents Day two of the st International Conference on Drugs and Young People saw experts calling for parents to be educated in how to recognise the signs that their children are using drugs. Dr John Toumbourou, from the Centre for Adolescent Health, said professionals needed to give parents of drug users more support and listen to their concerns. He called for increased education to enable parents to recognise their children were taking drugs as this meant they were better equipped to help them. A new program called PACE Tony Trimingham, whose son died of a heroin overdose, said parents needed more support but warned experts should not undermine parent’s skills. "Parents need acknowledgement," he said. "The need to be accepted as people who are the experts on their own kids". April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month
encourages local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues and to find solutions that work. This year’s theme is "Give Children a Chance End Underage Drinking." The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence also invites all Americans to participate in Alcohol-Free Weekend (April 4-6, 2003). Alcohol Awareness Month began in 1987 as a way to inform the public about alcoholism that it is a treatable disease, not a moral weakness, and that alcoholics are capable of recovery.

Competitions Parkinson's Awareness Week
6th-13th April 2003
Time to care

The Parkinson's Disease Society (PDS) launched its annual Parkinson’s Awareness Week on 6th April 2003. The week, which runs from 6th-13th April 2003, incorporates World Parkinson’s Day on the 11th of April and finishes with the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 13th of April, 2003 We seem to be constantly bombarded with warnings and information on the rise of one disease or another, which is obviously going to affect our attitudes towards certain conditions and play on our fears to a degree. Parkinson's disease for example affects one million people in the UK, and about 10,000 people are diagnosed in the UK each year - that's 27 every day. Parkinson's is a progressive, neurological disorder, which is mainly treated with drugs and it can affect all aspects of a person's life. It occurs when cells in the part of the brain which controls movement are lost, hence people with Parkinson's experience shaking, slowness of movement and muscle stiffness. In addition, people with the condition can also lose up to 93% of their ability to communicate. Usually symptoms appear after the age of 50 and the risk of developing Parkinson's increases with age. However, one in 20 people diagnosed are under the age of 40. (This is known as young-onset Parkinson's disease). Famous cases have helped to raise the profile of the condition and alter public attitudes. Muhammad Ali, Michael J Fox and Ray Kennedy have all fought to put Parkinson's disease on the agenda and moreover raise public awareness of the disease and the symptoms.

    Brain Chemical Messengers
Brain cells "talk to each other" by means of chemical messengers. When a person is exposed to too much stress, chemical communication in the brain begins to fail. When these messengers fail, a person suffers from sleep disturbance, aches and pains, depression and anxiety. This condition is called OVERSTRESS.

Three brain messengers control your sleeping, your energy levels, and your feelings of pain and pleasure.
