Students encounter dilemmas, pressures, and choices they make decisions about drugs and alcohol. The Drug Education Program is implemented at each grade level and is considered an integral part of each school's education program. The Drug Education Program is implemented by the classroom teachers with the support of the counselors, administration, parents, and the community. Throughout the three elementary buildings, there are teams of support members for the Drug Education Program including teachers, counselors, nurses, and other school personnel. These teams are fashioned after the C.A.R.E. Team outline. The Drug Education Program has adapted its program to better fit the needs of younger students with regards to drugs and alcohol. The D.A.R.E Program is conducted in grade five every year. The HISTEP program was developed by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency. High school students in the HISTEP program, act as role-models and give a series of lessons on self-esteem and drug education. Activities are conducted in cooperation with the local Community 2000 Team, such as Red Ribbon Week activities, 3-D month activities, safety workshops and fairs. The local PTA and the Republic Police Department conduct the McGruff The Crime Dog program that addresses drugs and alcohol in the elementary schools.

The Education and Prevention Team The Education and Prevention Team is a partnership project between DrugScope and Alcohol Concern, funded by the Department of Health and the Department for Education and Employment. The Team is now up to speed as far as staffing is concerned and will now begin to develop some major pieces of work. A first task is to write a guidance document for schools on alcohol education and policy issues. A questionnaire to schools and local authorities revealed that alcohol use among young people, and how to address this in the school context, was a cause of concern for teachers. The Team will consult with key partners, organisations and individuals to draw up the document, which is planned for publication later in 2001. The Team is also beginning production of a brief guidance document for primary schools on drug and alcohol policies. An OFSTED survey revealed 75% of primary schools do not have policies and that for those who do, many of the issues around drugs and alcohol facing this sector are different from those facing schools dealing with key stages 3 and 4 pupils. Making Strides is a new Internet resource published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and supported by the National Science Foundation's Minority Graduate Education Program . The goal of Making Strides is to identify and disseminate factors that affect minority students' underrepresentation in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering (SME), as well as the successful strategies that lead to their increased representation in SME doctoral programs and careers, in particular, the professoriate. American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) A national, nonprofit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering, business and other academic arenas. Through a variety of educational programs, AISES offers financial, academic and cultural support to American Indians and Alaska Natives from middle school through graduate school. Association of American Universities (AAU) The AAU currently consists of sixty American universities and two Canadian universities. Approximately half are public institutions and half are private.
