Just how pervasive is the American problem of unmastered basic and advanced academic skills? What are the consequences for those who fall short? What impact do the academic "have-nots" have on modern American culture? What applications of available technology, within the typical classroom, can facilitate the acquisition of basic and advanced academic skills? What laws and government initiatives drive this process? Specifically, what researched technological solutions successfully overcome the learning challenges experienced by dyslexic students? How can employment of technological solutions result in practical, fiscally responsible, compliance with the federal education and disability rights laws concerning people with "specific learning disabilities (SLDs)?" Who are the 11% of all U.S. students, aged 16-24, who dropout of school? (NCES 1997, 3) Who are the 92.6% of 17 year-olds who graduate without math proficiency in multi-step problem solving and algebra? (NCES 1997, 123-124) Who are the 21% of American adults who cannot read a simple paragraph, or the 22% who cannot perform simple arithmetic? (NCES 1997, 416)

Inclusion as an approach is the law of the land; as an attitude, inclusion presents one of the most idealistic and creative challenges teachers have ever faced! Classrooms today are far more diverse than heretofore, both nationally and locally. Students formerly in Resource Rooms and Gifted Centers are now integrated into the mainstreamwhich has undergone pressures to detrack.

    16. Blessed With Dyslexia By Stacy Poulos -Introduction-

    http://www.playback.net/vision/dyslexia/misson.htm
I've been in special Ed classes since I flunked the first grade. It didn't help my self-esteem growing up with a stigma of being "Learning Handicapped" or 'Dyslexic'. Even though deep inside I knew I was smart, I just couldn't prove it through the 'normal' channels of testing as other kids. (Images below are click-able) When I learned in my 7th grade Special Ed Class, Albert Einstein was dyslexic, I quit being ashamed of my disability; it gave me a sense of pride I never experienced before. I didn't know exactly what he did, I just knew that the same people who made me feel inferior, thought he was a "genius" (i.e. someone super smart), something I was never thought of to be (back then), but because Einstein and I had something 'in common', I realized I had potential to do great things. I just had to find the way. Just knowing that, lit the candle within me, and was a turning point in my life. This book is dedicated to helping others find the way on that road to self discovery, hopefully, to be who you are sooner. I begged my mom to get me out of "Special Ed"
