Since 1888, the magazine of the National Geographic Society has brought the world home to millions of readers through brilliantly vivid photographs, illustrated maps and compelling stories that bring natural history, culture, science and the various regions of the globe to life.
The Ancient Egyptians were a fascinating people as were most ancient cultures. But so much happened at that time and in that area! A good portion of the Old testament takes place in or around Egypt. Egypt also plays a major role in the life of many Bible people from Moses and Joseph to Jesus. So let's start out by looking at Egypt and just where in the world it is and then we will look at the people, the culture and all that other neat stuff! Here are some activities to get you started. As alway have your notebook and timeline ready and use lots of maps. Locate Egypt on your globe and mark it on your map.

This website is a collection of photos and text from a 10 day journey in Israel. I
arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in early March of 1999. I rented a car and found the
road. Road signs were in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Many people spoke a little
English. Spring time in Israel was much greener than the late summer, the photos
reflected some of this.
There were inexpensive hotels and restaurants for those who were skillful in finding bargains. There were exclusive areas with more amenities and privileges for those who chose to afford them.

Aspects of Life in Ancient Egypt
One of the most astonishing facts about Egypt is how little everyday life changed over the millennia. The rhythm of Egyptian life was the rhythm of the Nile until a few years ago, when the Aswan dam was erected. Even today one can find the ancient shadoof, oxen pulling ploughs and houses made of mud bricks.
The gods are gone, so are the pharaohs, the language and the writing. The cities look European in a ramshackle sort of way, transportation is partly 20th century, there's some industry, and radio and television are everywhere. But villages in the farther off corners of the country must still look very much like those of thousands of years ago.
  • I mostly choose topics not widely dealt with on the web. For the time being I do not include anything about pyramids or royal tombs for instance, as plenty of material can be found on these subjects. Descriptions generally refer to the period of the New Kingdom.

49. Geography Of Egypt
The land of egypt occupies the extreme northeast corner of the continent of Africaand a small area of southwest Asia. A Comparison of Upper and Lower egypt.
http://www.website1.com/odyssey/week1/egygeo.html
The land of Egypt occupies the extreme northeast corner of the continent of Africa and a small area of southwest Asia. Egypt is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by Sudan to the south, by the Red Sea and Israel on the east, and by Libya on the west.
Egyptian history is divided into periods that reflect the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king. Intermediate periods of Egyptian history were times when Upper and Lower Egypt were not unified under one king. Egypt is a country made up of two separate land areas: Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The names refer to ones location according to the flow of the Nile river. Upper Egypt is land upstream, or to the south and Lower Egypt is land downstream, or to the north.
A Comparison of Upper and Lower Egypt
Lower Egypt Upper Egypt Lower Egypt is known as Northern Egypt because it is downriver along the Nile. Lower Egypt is the northern-most section of Egypt stretching from just south of modern-day Cairo to the Nile Delta at Alexandria. Lower Egypt's landscape is dominated by the Nile delta at Alexandria. The deltal region is well watered, crisscrossed by channels and canals. There are marshy areas and the mosquitoes can be very annoying.

Map of Egypt
The geography of Egypt
through the eyes of Herodotus
There were land routes to Egypt, but they were difficult and dangerous leading through desert regions under the control of nomadic tribes. A seasoned traveller chose to reach Egypt by sea. And this was exactly what Herodotus was: the tourist par excellence . And like any tourist he kept his eyes open for the unusual and his writings reflect this attitude. In Egypt practically everything was strange and marvellous. He may be forgiven for being taken in at times by tall stories or for misunderstanding what he was told. The Nile had seven major arms in those days. Their exact courses are unknown, but the major cities grew alongside these waterways. Naukratis, built and inhabited by Ionians and reached through the westernmost, the Canobic mouth, was one of the main gateways for trade and travellers.

Ancient Egypt: Herodotus' description of some of the pharaohs
Herodotus on the pharaohs
Herodotus was born about 490 BCE at Halicarnassos in Carien and died in the late 420's. His travels took him to Asia and northern Africa. At Athens he became a friend of Pericles and Sophocles. In 444 BCE he went to Thurii in Italy where he died. The second volume of his Histories describes Egypt's geography and people. He also relates stories about a number of pharaohs. He has often been accused of not being very truthful or, at the very least, of being wrong, gullible or both. Diodorus Siculus explains his criteria for including material in his own Historical Library We will pass over the baseless news of Herodotus and other writers about Egyptian history, who instead of the truth wanted to present us rather with tales of wonder and entertaining inventions; in contrast we will report after attentive scrutiny what the Egyptian priests themselves wrote in their documents. Translation after Diodor's von Sicilien Historische Bibliothek
First volume, chapter 69
