AN INTEGRATED Unit FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
    BY: JENNIFER AUFMANN
This web page is designed to teach middle to late elementary students(third to fifth grade) about the concepts of electricity through multiple hands on, reading, and writing activities. This site will give multiple electricity activities that are applicable to different academic subjects. Each activity is mainly science based but the different lessons will be altered to fit the curriculum of all academic subject areas. The activities are organized by one of the following subjects, Children's Literature, Science Lab Activities, Math Activities, Art Activities, and History Activities. Children's Literature Below is a list and short summary of children's books that incorporate the topic of electricity in some form. 1.) Berger, Melvin. "Wild Weather" Ranger Rick 1993: pg. 4-5
This issue of Ranger Rick explains thunderstorms and other kinds of "Wild Weather." It relates lightning to electricity by explaining in basic terms how electricity forms during a thunderstorm. This book is a great introductory book to relating electricity to the everyday world. Branley, Franklin M.

Scroll for details. Kit Use Through a KSN Teacher's Eyes: Magnetism and Electricity (FOSS) Paul Wade , a fourth grade teacher at Middlesex Elementary School in the Cumberland Valley School District (part of the Capital Area Math/Science Alliance), has worked with FOSS's Magnetism and Electricity kit for six years, and offers tales of his experiences with this particular kit. Paul tells a bit about what the kit is like, explaining that it's a "third and fourth grade kit which consists of three activities exploring permanent magnetism, simple electrical circuits, and electromagnetism, and a fourth culminating activity that requires the students to apply the concepts they learned in the first three activities to construct a telegraph." His district's science coordinator recommended this kit as a good source of supplementary activities to teach electricity, and Paul says "I tried it, liked it, and have been using it ever since." This kit suits Paul's curriculum nicely. "My district's 4th grade science curriculum uses the science program Scholastic Science Place. The FOSS kit is a perfect complement to this program in providing supplemental activities to reinforce and/or enrich the key concepts. I have found through experience that most fourth graders lack background knowledge on magnetism, so I also use the FOSS kit to teach this concept."

Thirty stand-alone science lessons on the topics of water, energy, and fish and wildlife were developed by teachers for use by BPA employees volunteering to teach elementary classes in their local schools. Now being offered to teachers to augment their science curricula. Hands-on activities and experiments lead students to discover science concepts for themselves. In each of the three topic areas, units are graded for K-1, 2-3 and 4-5 grades, but many of the lessons can be used across grade levels. View SOLD

This manual is a teacher's guide to energy conservation activities for elementary and middle school students, developed in Eugene, Oregon, in 1993 with a grant from Bonneville Power Administration. It can be used to teach students to monitor their school building for energy consumption so that they can start thinking about using resources wisely. The manual includes a pretest and post-test; simulation games to build problem solving and teamwork skills; and training in basic electricity and practical skills like meter reading. RAPPING MATHTIMES TABLES
    GRADES: 3-6
    MATERIALS:
  • papers with the multiplication, addition, division or subtraction facts
    METHOD:
  • Type or write up connecting sentences. I do the typing on one sheet so I can see the connections. eg. First Sentence would read: " Who has the answer to 7 x 7?" The next sentence would read. "I have the answer- it's 49. Who has the answer to 3 x 4?" The next sentence would read, " I have the answer- it's 12. Who has the ....." You can end the game at any time using "Who has the end? and the lucky student which "The End" on their paper is the last to read.
  • Cut the sentences apart. ( if laminated- they can be used several times)
  • Distribute the sentences to the kids and tell them they have to listen carefully as the are going to rap the sentences. The first child's sentence will have star on it to indicate that they go first.
I like to do this activity sitting on a carpeted space where the kids are close to each other and can hear the lines read.

    http://www.amasci.com/miscon/elteach.html
Up to SCIENCE HOBBYIST Up to MISCONCEPTIONS CASTLE material. It takes a conceptual approach to electricity teaching, and is used in high school physics classes. It concentrates on charge flow and energy transfer concepts, and doesn't contain all the misleading "electricity" contradictions. There's also the old "BATTERIES AND BULBS" lesson plan. I don't know the publisher, but it's been around since about 1983 and is excellent. My own attempt at some visual/conceptual introductory material is here: Explaining "electricity" with red/green plastic sheets. If I were teaching, I'd concentrate on initially having the kids play with all sorts of real electrical devices. Batteries and bulbs, little motors, loudspeakers, maybe solar cells and LEDs (from Radio Shack.) A secret: buy lots of "clip leads", wires with little alligator clips on each end. This lets you connect various devices together, even if the devices lack proper connecting terminals. One particularly wonderful device is the "Genecon" hand-cranked generator, available by mail order from Arbor Scientific among others. (www.arborsci.com)

April 2001 – Electricity Dear Teacher, With summer on the way, why not spark your students' interest in electricity ? Help them understand what causes those crackling summer lightning storms. But no reason to stop there. Electricity causes static, allows us to communicate, and provides enormous amounts of power. We have lessons about all of these topics for intermediate, middle, and secondary students. You will also find related Web resources and literature tie-ins For the month of April, the PearsonAtSchool suggested titles below.
