Festival Nebraska Chapters Books Travel ... Home Kroje Authentic 'KROJE" From The Czech Republic & The Slovak Republic By Willa Mae Cervenka , Published in Czech Reflections in 1994 The wearing of "kroje", or costumes, is one way in which it serves as a promotion in helping to keep alive the traditions of Czech and Slovak culture. Men, women and children take great pride in wearing their costumes and participating at festivals throughout the year. The interest in the Czech culture is evident by the number of Czech festivals held throughout the United States every year. Folk costumes are an indispensable part of folk songs, music and dances and are the pride of our heritage. There are many varieties of costumes, reportedly more than 550 of either Czech or Slovak origin. Out of this group, twenty-seven of them are more familiar, because they bear the names of important cultural centers of the Czech and Slovak Republics. The differences in the costumes reflect the differences in geography and influence of neighboring cultures. To a great extent, the look of the kroje depended not only on the district of origin, but also on the purpose for which they were used. Fine distinguishing features such as intricate embroidery, bright colors, designs, ornaments, flowers and the style of the blouses, kerchiefs, lace, etc. all help to characterize the origin of the kroje.

Broderie Anglaise.
MARCH 17, 2003 - by Lynne Belluscio - The beams are in, bolted together and painted. By next week, I should be able to get to my desk for the first time in two months. It hasn't been an easy project. After discovering the high water level - which we have decided has always been there - the footers had to be poured before the side of the holes fell in. The building was built with its feet in the water over a hundred years ago and it hasn't moved since, so it won't be any worse for the construction. As the beams went into place I really wondered if the building would ever forgive us for what we are doing, but now that everything is braced up and back in place, I think I heard a great sigh of relief. There's still a lot more work to do - a sump pump and a cement floor in the basement and wooden beams in the attic to support the roof. We also have a fine example of knitted lace trim and several examples of crocheted trim. One petticoat has a five inch hem of filet crochet. It is identified by a dense, lacy open fabric with a grid-like design. I think I have found several tatted trims. Tatting dates to the 18th Century, but became very popular in 1850 when Mlle Riego published several volumes of instructions and designs. Tatting is actually a type of knot tying that utilizes the lark's head knot or cow hitch as it's called. It's really two half hitches. It's similar to macrame, but it uses a continuous string and macrame uses a variety of knots.

Free-Motion Openwork Lace
by Liz Field
Free-motion sewing has been around ever since the sewing machine was invented. Its revival has brought new popularity in current home fashion trends. The development of computerized sewing has moved the time honored art of hand embroidery up to the speed needed for the fast pace of today's lifestyle. Free-motion can be done on any sewing machine, even today's basic models. For the free-motion technique, the movement of the fabric is not controlled by the presser foot and feed dog as in other machine embroidery. The use of an embroidery hoop allows unrestricted hand movement of the fabric as well as the size and placement of the stitches. It can be compared to freehand drawing using a machine needle and thread. This machine stitching technique offers limitless design possibilities. You can create your own original designs by drawing from the vast pool of inspiration found in nature, as well as the world of art. Geometrics, florals, contemporary or antique designs, to mention a few, can be stitched to embellish any number of items you want to incorporate in your decor. Editor and designer Fran Rohus has combined free-motion embroidery with cutwork to create an openwork lace embellishment for table linens that will take center stage in any dining room or breakfast nook.

http://www.germangifts24.com/sites/plauener_lace.html
Plauener lace Plauen Lace (Plauener Spitze) and embroidery (Plauener Stickerei) have their roots in a centuries old tradition of textile manufacture in and around the city of Plauen in Germany. Here are some important highlights in the history of Plauen lace:
1780 The embroidery trade begins to grow in the Vogtland region of Germany, centered around the city of Plauen
1810 Satin-stitch embroidery, done by hand, spreads throughout the region.
1828 In Plauen and in the surrounding areas of the Vogtland more than 2,000 people work in hand embroidery. It becomes a new main source of employment.
1858 The first hand-operated embroidery machines are used, and industrialization begins.
1880 Production increases rapidly. The production of machine-made lace becomes a technological marvel. It becomes known throughout the world as Plauener Spitze (Plauen lace).
1900 Plauen Lace designs and its new technology are awarded a Grand Prize at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris.
1913-1945 After a long growth period, the production of Plauen Lace begins to decline as a result of World War I. During World War II, almost all factories and designs are destroyed.
1950 The lace and embroidery industry, at first in private hands, begins again in the German Democratic Republic. In 1972 the East German government nationalizes these small family-owned factories.

Make elegant lace on your home-embroidery machine that rivals the quality of the finest lace you can buy
by Barbara Skimin
Elegant Lace
design available for download at www.threadsembroidery.com
Individual motifs fit together jigsaw-style to create an original pattern. These six Elegant Lace motifs were used in countless combinations sewn on tulle and sandwiched between water-soluble stabilizers to produce the allover lace shown below. First, choose appropriate embroidery designs You'll need an embroidery machine to make this lace and suitable embroidery designs, and there are many such designs available for most machines. If you want to download designs from the Internet , you'll also need embroidery software compatible with your machine. Choosing motifs for allover lace (opens in new window) To create unique overall lace, you'll need to use several separate designs in a variety of motifs and sizes. It's not necessary to use freestanding lace designs per se, although there are many available. Such designs are intended to be sewn on water-soluble stabilizer and create an underlay of thread where needed as the lace is stitched out. These designs are suitable for the technique I describe here, but they take a little longer to sew because of all the extra thread work. Embroidery designs that are simply meant to be stitched on fabric are just as effective for creating lace, because, in my approach, they'll be sewn onto a layer of tulle sandwiched between two layers of stabilizer (I'll talk about that in a moment), and the tulle serves as the thread underlay.
