To Netnews Homepage Previous Next Index ... Table of Contents Discipleship in the New Age I - Personal Instructions to Disciples - S.S.P. June 1935 MY BROTHER: During the coming six months I am going to ask you to do two things: First of all, concentrate your energy each day and do not dissipate it in so many unrelated activities. A wise conservation of energy and the elimination of non-essential activity is for you desirable at this time; it will bring about an inner organization of your forces which in a year's time will greatly increase your usefulness in service. Secondly, I want you to lay emphasis in your meditation on the simple, and apparently elementary, stage of alignment. The work of watching each day your use of energy, and your meditation practice in alignment will produce in you a greatly increased efficiency. Your alignment is weak. Your motives are all that could be desired from the angle of your knowledge; your devotion to the cause of humanity is equally right; your liking for your fellowmen is very real. Your mind is active and alert, and you are deeply interested in life and in all that concerns human relations. But your coordination and your alignment are not good. The coordination factor is that which governs the integration of your personality - mental, emotional and physical - whilst the alignment factor is related to the control by your soul, and the establishing of a direct line of contact between your soul and your brain, via your mind.

Using the Child's Environment To Teach at Home and School. ERIC/CSMEE Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982).

http://www.sseb.org/cpa_caps.htm
One of the major challenges facing the world in the 21st Century will be reconciling the expanding concerns for energy security, environmental quality and economic development. The continued growth of energy consumption coupled with the expected increase in the use of fossil fuels will heighten these concerns. According to the International Energy Agency, world primary energy consumption is expected to increase by 57 percent between 1997 and 2020. The largest share of this increase will be attributed to the development of fossil energy resources. To reduce global warming and proliferating greenhouse gases from a world reliance on fossil energy, new cleaner fossil fuel systems will be needed. The United States will lead the development of these new technologies through the Clean Coal Power Initiative promulgated by the Bush Administration. Positioned to ensure a role for southern states, utilities, industries and businesses in the development of cleaner fossil fuel systems is the Southern States Energy Board’s Committee on Coal and Advanced Power Systems . Comprised of state, federal and industry officials, the Committee promotes the use of coal and the implementation of clean coal-related technologies on domestic and international levels. As a key resource for southern states, the Committee focuses on the elimination of institutional barriers to coal technology development; market development and opportunities for clean coal initiatives; international business development and exports for U.S. industries; initiation and monitoring of legislative measures at state and federal levels; and greater opportunities for economic development utilizing coal from southern and eastern states.

http://www.treetures.com/Stewardteach.html
Steward: Steward is a Street Treeture. He cares for and protects urban street trees Background:
Changes in environment can be natural or influenced by humans. Some changes are good, some are bad, and some are neither good nor bad. Pollution is a change in the environment that can influence the health, survival, or activities of organisms, including humans.
Trees, especially large deciduous shade trees, provide cooling shade during the warmer months of the year. Shade trees cool homes, office buildings, sidewalks, parking lots and many other urban and rural locations. We all understand how much cooler we feel sitting under a tree versus the hot sun on the sidewalk; however, just how much that tree can cool the air is a surprise to many of us. The temperature under a medium-sized tree is at least 3 to 4 percent cooler than the air around or above the tree. In fact, well-placed trees can reduce the need for air conditioning in a home or building by as much as 30 percent. This reduced need for artificial cooling produces a domino effect: reduced need for air conditioning less energy needed to run the air conditioner less fossil fuels needed (oil, coal) to fuel the air conditioner less pollutants created by the burning and mining of these fuels.
Awareness of the need to find a balance between urban development and a healthy urban ecosystem is important to our well being. The creation of heat islands can be a danger to our physical, psychological and economical health. A heat island is a term that refers to mostly urban areas with few trees and green areas. A large percent of the earth is covered in cement and asphalt. Trees and greenery can drastically reduce summer temperatures and minimize the "heat island effect."

In addition to being a terrific toy, the Slinky is an excellent device for demonstrating various properties of physics. The Slinky, like all objects, tends to resist change in its motion. Because of this inertia , if placed at the top of stairs it stays at rest. At this point it has potential or stored energy . But once it is started down the stairs and gravity affects it, the potential energy is converted to the energy of motion or kinetic energy and the Slinky gracefully tumbles coil by coil down the stairs. Physical properties of the Slinky determine how quickly it moves under the influence of gravity . Although its movement may look simple, from a scientific point of view the motion is quite complex.

Here are some activities you can do to help save energy. energy Efficiency, AmericanSolar energy Society, National energy Foundation, 5160 teach with energy

Learning About Saving Energy
Summary: This fact sheet shows young scholars some ways to save energy and why it's important to do so. To view illustrations, you can download the PDF version ( PDF 87 KB ) of this fact sheet ( Download Acrobat Reader ). See Related Links below for more publications and resources on related topics, which aren't included in the PDF version. What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. It can come in the forms of heat and light. There are two types of energy: working energy and stored energy. Stored energy becomes working energy when we use it. You eat food for energy. Then your body stores the energy until you need it. When you work and play, your stored energy becomes working energy. We use energy every day. We use it to grow our food, warm and cool our homes, make our electricity, run our cars, and make products like clothes and toys. It is a very important part of our lives. Most of the time, we use stored energy for fuel. Burning fuel sets the stored energy free in the form of heat. Long ago, people only burned wood as fuel. Now, we mostly burn "fossil fuels" oil, natural gas, and coal. They are called fossil fuels because they are formed over millions of years from the fossils, or remains, of dead animals and plants. The fossils became buried under dirt and rock. Heat from the earth and pressure from dirt and rock changes these fossils into oil, natural gas, and coal. Because it takes millions of years to make, or "renew," more fossil fuels, we call them "nonrenewable fuels."
