Contact us The Environmental Issues Of Electricity Production The variety of fuels used to generate electricity all have some impact on the environment. Fossil fuel power plants release air pollution, require large amounts of cooling water, and can mar large tracts of land during the mining process. Nuclear power plants are generating and accumulating copious quantities of radioactive waste that currently lack any repository. Even renewable energy facilities can affect wildlife (fish and birds), involve hazardous wastes, or require cooling water. For specifics on any issue:

Description The survey provides data on energy sources, use and conservation by domestic households as well as type of appliances. Method of collection The survey is run as a supplement to the Monthly Population Survey. The MPS is a sample of private dwellings and non-private dwellings (hotels, motels, etc.). The proportion of Australian dwellings selected this way is approximately 0.5%. For this survey, half the private dwelling sample (i.e. 15,500 dwellings) are used. Data detail

Energy and the Environment / Dealing with Global Environmental Issues 2. Dealing with Global Environmental Issues There is currently considerable worldwide interest and concern in environmental issues such as global warming, acid rain, desertification, and the destruction of the ozone layer. It is essential that we seek a correct understanding of these problems and act in a concerted effort, both as individuals and as members of society.
Environmental problems are closely linked to the way we utilize energy for economic activities and in our daily lives. Energy demand tends to increase yearly in proportion to economic and social development, and as contemporary information-oriented society develops toward a higher level of sophistication and our lifestyles become increasingly centered on amenities, the demand for electricity can be expected to rise further.
The electric power industry is fully committed to global environmental issue in all its activities, including power supply, transmission and distribution. Recognizing our responsibility to pass on economic and social progress to future generations, we pursue a policy of socioeconomic development combined with active measures to protect the environment and conserve our irreplaceable natural resources.

    Developing Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is one of the most important power sources currently in use in Japan. Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japanfs first commercial nuclear power plant started operation in 1966. As of March 1998, 51 plants with a total output capacity of 44,917MW are in operation throughout Japan. Nuclear power generation in 1997@accounted for a total of 319,100GWh, increasing to approximately 36% of Japanfs total power output (excluding industrial in-house generators).
Since 1983, nuclear power plants in Japan have maintained operations at over 70% of their capacity, putting Japan in a leading position in global nuclear power generation. Japan is a country with no domestic natural resources, and with the anticipated continued increase in the demand for electricity, nuclear power is expected to continue playing a vital role as a quasi-domestic energy source.
The most important alternative to oil, nuclear power offers excellent supply stability and economic efficiency. Nuclear power does not produce CO2, hence its use contributes to the prevention of global warming. For these reasons, nuclear power will continue to serve as the core energy source for power generation in Japan.

    Executive Summary
State and local governments are blazing a groundbreaking path to integrate how they think about, make decisions and formulate policy on energy and environmental issues. With assistance and leadership from four key state organizations – the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), the State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators and their local counterparts (STAPPA/ALAPCO), the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) - an effort has begun to help institutionalize, on a state-by-state and state-federal basis, consideration of energy and environmental integration. The driving force behind this effort is the growing number of critical decisions that states face over the next several years concerning how to provide a healthy environment while simultaneously ensuring an adequate and reliable power supply to enhance and maintain a robust economy. Federal, state, and local government officials are witnessing the convergence of several factors that offer a unique opportunity for positive change in the context of integrating energy and environmental approaches. These factors include:

Companies rigorously train and prepare for any potential hazard. On average each employee working in the natural gas industry receives approximately one week's worth of safety training each year. The training includes CPR, defensive driving, first aid training, as well as training in specific gas related areas. Some companies regularly conduct training with La Plata County fire departments and emergency personnel.
Monitoring and emergency shut-off equipment is routinely installed to avoid dangerous situations should an accident occur. Companies strictly adhere to federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations to protect employees and the area in which they work.
    Emergency Preparedness
Every gas well is required to be identified by a sign, which contains the well name and the phone number of the operator. Each company has an emergency phone system that alerts personnel, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, should a emergency call come in regarding any well or gas facility. The county requires operators to submit an emergency preparedness plan along with contact phone information updated annually or as conditions change. back to top Sound There are various aspects of natural gas development that produce sound such as pumpjacks, compressors or safety valves. Natural gas production sound is regulated by the COGCC and the total sound from a facility must fall within state prescribed limits that ensure hearing safety and reasonable levels of overall sound. Sound produced during construction is allowed at higher levels for a short duration, but still limited for hearing-safety purposes. Sound mitigation measures, such as sound walls or sound-insulted buildings are often installed to lower the levels of sound produced at natural gas facilities to comply with state regulated limits.

NOAA SCIENTISTS LINK INTERNATIONAL DROUGHTS AND OCEAN TEMPERATURES
Weather patterns could be consequence of greenhouse gases
    31 January 2003
Droughts in the United States, Southern Europe and Southwest Asia in 1998-2002 were caused by the "perfect ocean for drought," according to a study published in the magazine Science by researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Cold sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific and warm sea surface temperatures in the western tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean worked together to create an abnormal pattern in tropical rainfall, according to a January 31 NOAA press release. Climate scientists Martin Hoerling and Arun Kumar came to these conclusions after entering actual sea surface temperatures in climate simulation computer programs.

Columbia Conference Addresses International Energy Policy and Environmental Issues Featured Speakers Include Deputy Energy Secretary T.J. Glauthier and Ambassador John Wolf Abigail Beshkin Secretary T.J. Glauthier Columbia University will gather a high-level panel of government energy policy-makers and corporate oil executives for a forum on energy policy this Tuesday, October 24. Participants will include Deputy Energy Secretary T.J. Glauthier; Ambassador John Wolf, special advisor to the president and secretary of state for Caspian Basin energy diplomacy, and Robert C. McNally, Jr., economic and energy policy advisor to the Bush/Cheney campaign. The program begins at 9 a.m. at the International Affairs Building, 15th Floor, 420 West 118th St. at Amsterdam Avenue. These energy policy specialists gather at a time of much ongoing public discussion about energy: the price of heating oil is expected to rise 25 percent this year and one of the coldest winters in recent history has been predicted for the Northeast. Additionally, the crisis in the Middle East threatens to upset oil supplies, raise prices and perhaps trigger an economic downturn. Throughout the day, panelists will discuss strategies to reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil; environmental policy, and foreign policy, particularly as it relates to Caspian energy development and transportation. Sponsored by Columbia's new Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy, the conference will feature presentations by Wolf, who will speak on "East-West Energy Corridor: Steps Forward;" Robert C. McNally, Jr., economic and energy policy advisor to the Bush/Cheney campaign, who will discuss "U.S. Energy Policy Priorities ‹ the Republican Perspective," and Marc Levy, associate director for science applications at the Columbia University Earth Institute, who will speak on "U.S. Energy and Environmental Policy Options After Kyoto."
