Much of the responsibility for maintaining the woodlands, fields and pathways in and around the village falls to three main groups, North Mymms Parish Council , for the roads, pathways, verges and Gobions Open Space, Gobions Woodland Trust , for the woodland south of Gobions Open Space, and the farmers and residents whose property borders the village. The North Mymms Green Belt Society acts as a pressure group and monitors planning applications which could threaten the character of the village and surrounding area. The Society now has its own site which is regularly updated. This site has an interactive Forum where you can have your say about environmental issues. Gobions Woodland Trust Friends' Report 2001
This report featured 49 species of flowering herbs and shrubs seen during a short survey from Gobions Open Space car park through Gobions Woodland and back in April 2002. Illustrations have been added to the text submitted by Brenda Harold's WEA class, which carried out the survey. The report also includes an illustration and description of the geometry of Charles Bridgeman's design for Gobions and explains the significance of Gladiator, Hercules, Cleopatra, the urn, the temple and the obelisk. It also includes proposals, set out by the Woodland Trust for its second Heritage Lottery Fund application.

Eastern region environment index published
The first systematic benchmark of environmental management amongst employers in the East of England region, the Index of Environmental Engagement 2002 was published in July 2002. In its first year, the Business in the Environment Index for the East of England includes 65 of the region's leading private and public sector employers, of 144 invited.
This includes 37 organisations participating in a Business in the Environment Index for the first time. Companies as diverse as Perkins Engines Company, G's Marketing, General Trailers UK and Adnams Brewery participated, as did all six county councils, four universities, and the conservation charity the RSPB.
The development of the new Index has been driven by a group of senior executives from some of the East of England's leading organisations. Chaired by Chris Mellor, Chief Executive of awg plc, the regional leadership team for the business-led charity Business in the Community has focused on the environment as a key issue for responsible business practice in the region. Research released by Business in the Community in June reveals that 78% of Chief Executives and main board directors across Europe believe that companies will be more competitive only by fully integrating responsible business practice.

The MMS Physician Practice Environment Index Report - July, 2001 Health Policy
(Keywords: research reports MMS Index physician practice practice environment
The MMS Physician Practice Environment Index declined 7.2 percent in 2000 the seventh consecutive decline since 1993. A review of the nine individual indicators that make up the Index shows that roughly two-thirds of the 7.2 percent decline in 2000 may be explained by changes in four indicators. These indicators include:
  • Increase in the business costs of maintaining a professional practice Ratio of housing prices to physician income Increase in malpractice costs Increase in Massachusetts physician employment ads in the New England Journal of Medicine
All other indicators showed only modest variations in the year 2000 from the previous year.
The Purpose of the MMS Index
Over the past decade, the MMS has noted the growing challenges facing physicians' practices in Massachusetts: concerns that external factors are causing an erosion in the quality of care physicians are able to provide to their patients, concerns with the financial viability of their practices, and strong evidence that it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain the best and brightest physicians in Massachusetts. The newly created MMS Index was designed to measure statistically the impact of specific factors that shape the overall environment in which the Massachusetts physician provides patient care. The base period that marks the beginning of the Index is 1992 the end of the last recession and the beginning of significant penetration of managed care in the employer health care market. These developments created significant changes, not only in the financial environment, but also on how medicine is practiced in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Index Declined 5.7 Percent in 2001 During the Same Period, the Statistically Comparable Index for the U.S. Fell Only 3.4 Percent The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) Physician Practice Environment Index declined 5.7 percent in 2001 the eighth consecutive yearly decline since 1993. The MMS also released today a second Index representing changes in the Physician Practice Environment for the U.S. as a whole. The new U.S. Index is statistically comparable to the Massachusetts Index and provides valuable benchmark data to judge the condition of the physicians’ practice environment in Massachusetts vis-à-vis that of the country over time. The two Indexes for the period 1992 through 2001 are plotted on the accompanying chart A review of the performance of the individual indicators in each of the two Indexes highlights the factors that contributed to the 2001 decline. Three factors dominate the 2001 decline in Massachusetts, while only two factors account for the decline in the U.S. Index. The relevant data are shown in the brief table below.
