Teach To Care, Don't Scare
Jason C., Desert Hot Springs, CA

It has occurred to me that the most obvious way to solve our environmental problems has slipped the grasp of even the most intelligent people. Recently, televisions, radios, and street corners have been plastered with warnings of global chaos soon to wreak havoc in our lives. The truth is that these notes of our earth's declining health fail to inspire the average person to lend a hand.
The obvious answer is to try a new approach. I suggest that an attempt to build pride will work better than any preservation plan. In order to save the earth, we will need a message that bears on our pride and not our conscience. To do that we need only to emphasize the great majesty of the world around us. We cannot expect people to go out of their way to sacrifice for something they cannot see - unless we show them. More than half the people in the world will never see the rainforests, so how will they know it is worth saving? Instead of scaring them with tales of horror and fear, we must describe their beauty and significance. Teach them to marvel at the migrations of animals and fall in awe at the millions of species that inhabit the earth. Teach them to take pride in the only known planet to harvest life. Teach them to respect the gracefulness of the eagle and the power of earthquakes.
Tornadoes, hurricanes, and tidal waves are always discussed because of their destructiveness and never their mystery and importance. We cannot expect children to grow up caring for a planet that they fear, or know little about. If you give a child a present, and teach him to take pride in it, he will take better care of it than if you force him with threats.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC The world of a child is the tangible, real world of the here and now. It is difficult for children to extend ideas from the small, familiar world in which they operate to the larger, abstract world beyond. Even adults envision distant parts of the world based on their own experiences and prior learning. Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution." Though pollution tends to have a negative connotation, not all pollution necessarily affects the environment adversely (Botkin and Keller, 1982).

Description: Ivory poachers interrupt the peaceful existence of a Bushman family living deep in the Kalahari desert. Two of the Bushman children explore the poachers' truck and are accidentally carried away. Xixo, their father, follows the tire tracks left by the truck. On his way he meets Ann Taylor, a New York attorney, and Dr. Marshall, a local naturalist, who are lost in the bush. Xixo also encounters a Cuban soldier and an African soldier each of whom is trying to capture the other. The movie relates their adventures as Xixo tracks his children and everyone else tries to get home.
Benefits: This hilarious film allows us to see ourselves from the Bushman point of view: overweight incompetents who can't read the signs of nature or take care of themselves in the desert. We are introduced to the Bushman culture, the destruction of the elephant herds for ivory, and Great Power adventurism in Africa. The film contains beautiful photography of the African landscape, its skies, and its animals. Xixo is a role model for a good father and a competent, compassionate man. Dr. Marshall, the naturalist, is also a good man. Subscribe now for the Premium Learning Guide to this and 230 other films.

Biomes Doug Eldon
Scientists have long observed that even on different continents, particular plants and animals live in specific regions or areas. They have developed different ways of classifying these regions based on similarities in location, climate, plants, and animals. These regions are called biomes.
Deserts are dry but the temperature varies Tundras are dry, but all year it may freeze Grasslands get more rain and may be called prairies Savannas are grasslands that also have trees.
Chorus: Oh the biomes are regions with similar climate (precipitation and temperatures) The climate determines soil and vegetation Which then determines the kinds of creatures
In coniferous forests there are conifer trees Needleleaf evergreens like pine and fir Deciduous forests have trees that drop broad leaves Rainforests are wet and warm most of the year
Chorus
The freshwater biome includes streams and rivers Lakes, ponds, swamps, marshes, and lands that are wet The saltwater biome, the seas and the oceans Called the marine it's too large to forget
Chorus
Many thanks to Doug and Dorry Eldon for permission to publish these lessons and lyrics from their Lyrical Life Science series, which includes

Why Should My Child Learn About the Environment So Early?
The rationale for environmental education during the early childhood years is based on two major premises. First, children must develop a sense of respect and caring for the natural environment during their first few years of life or be at risk for never developing such attitudes. Second, positive interactions with the natural environment are an important part of healthy child development, and these interactions enhance learning and the quality of life over the span of one's lifetime. Children who are close to nature relate to it as a source of wonder, joy, and awe. Wonder rather than books, words, or learning all the facts provides the direction and impetus for environmental education in early childhood. Environmental education during the early years should be based on this sense of wonder and the joy of discovery.

What Can I Teach My Young Child About the Environment? Reprinted Article, December 1999
This brochure is based on the 1996 ERIC Digest, Starting Early: Environmental Education During the Early Childhood Years, written by Ruth A. Wilson for the ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education.
When should environmental education begin - in the third grade? first grade? kindergarten? The answer is even earlier. Environmental education based on life experiences should begin during the very earliest years of life. Such experiences play a critical role in shaping lifelong attitudes, values, and patterns of behavior toward natural environments. Because young children learn about the environment by interacting with it, educators and other adults must attend to the frequency, nature, and quality of child-environment interactions during the early years. Many young children have limited opportunities for these experiences. In fact, regardless of where they live, young children spend most of their time in settings or doing activities that keep them essentially isolated from the natural world.

Modernizing Meditation: Researchers Create Virtual Environment to Teach and Enhance Meditation
With colleague Chris Shaw, Larry Hodges and Diane Gromala have created a virtual reality program to help make meditation more appealing and easier to learn. Georgia Tech Photo: Gary Meek 300 dpi JPG version (769Kb) A virtual reality-based program aimed at making meditation more appealing and easier to learn is under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Researchers have created a "meditation chamber," which they have field-tested and are now refining for potential commercialization by a faculty start-up company.
In its current form, the program is a 15-minute virtual experience in relaxation techniques and meditation. Users wear a head-mounted display with audio and video that guides them through a series of sunset and moonrise scenes and muscle relaxation exercises. The system also monitors the users' respiration, pulse rate and sweat gland activity (a measure of calmness) to provide real-time biofeedback regarding the effectiveness of the virtual experience.
