Careers in Art, Humanities, and Communication
Choosing a Major Shapes Your Career Direction "So what do you want to do when you grow up?" Now this question has new meaning, as it's time to choose a major field of study at your college or university (the end of your sophomore year in a bachelor's program and at the onset of an associate's degree). It's a question that's come up for approximately 15 million college students, according to the latest Department of Education statistics. What criteria do you use to ensure future career satisfaction? Choosing the field and particular job you'll be happy performing for years requires a look at your values, wants, and needs. Consider your aptitudes and the type of work you like (technical vs. non-technical). Talk not only to counselors at your college or university, but friends, family, and acquaintances who'll share just how and why they entered their current career fields. Gathering information early will pay big dividends when it's time to zero in on your life work. For a start, read books such as "What Color Is Your Parachute" by Richard Bolles, and check out the many Internet sites with personality assessments. The Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes information on approximately 140,000+ jobs, including salaries, nature of the work, working conditions, qualifications, job description, and job outlook. You'll also want to look at the database published online by the U.S. Department of Labor. And The College Board has many books and CD-ROMS for college planning. Check out

AUSTRALIAN HISTORY MUSEUM
Two programs are offered to schools. Both are in accordance with the NSW Board of Studies current History and Modern History syllabuses. A program is offered in the topics of the mandatory syllabus, which reflects the focus areas of study and enquiry questions of the syllabus. The program promotes students' interpretation, analysis and empathy by using a variety of forms, sources and perspectives. Sessions can be presented as a single topic or as combined topics. For large groups arrangements can be made for the education officer to bring the program to schools in the metropolitan area. This program focuses on the key features and requirements of the new syllabus. Emphasis is placed on the skills of interpretation, analysis and evaluation of the sources. Students are encouraged to recognise the difference between usefulness and reliability, to consider different perspectives and to present their conclusions based on evidence. Original source material includes photographs, propaganda, recruiting posters, letters, postcards, cartoons, medals, objects, newspapers, maps and magazines.

ART MUSEUMS ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF LONG-TIME BENEFACTOR Contact: Kate McShea Ewen - (617) 495-2397
Released: December 15, 1998 Lois Orswell's gifts of works of art began modestly forty-five years ago with the donation of an ancient stone sculpture, but in 1955 the scope and focus of her collecting was announced by her gift of The Actors, the magisterial Max Beckmann triptych from 1941-42. Although she had no formal or personal connection with the University, she was reassured by the confidence and gratitude of John Coolidge, then director of the Fogg Art Museum. Over the next few years, as she transferred her residence from Rhode Island to Connecticut and her personal commitment from art collecting to environmental rights concerns, she continued to donate works from her art collection or put them on deposit at the Fogg for future donation and bequest, without ever losing her passionate commitment to the value of art or her interest in museums. "You must know," she wrote, "I begin to shrivel up if I do not see a work of art for a few days." Today, every curatorial department in the Art Museums holds works from the Orswell collection, with the Beckmann and the somber

The result of a collaboration between the Art museums and the department of Visualand environmental Studies (VES), the Sert Gallery builds upon the Art
http://www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/press/released2000/sert.html
HARVARD UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUMS INAUGURATES GALLERY SPACE DEDICATED TO MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART Sert Gallery housed in only Le Corbusier building in North America "The creation of the Sert Gallery continues the Art Museums tradition of working with other departments in the Harvard community to create new opportunities for teaching and research," said James Cuno, Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director of the Harvard University Art Museums. "This new space furthers our commitment to modern and contemporary art by providing increased opportunities for exhibiting these growing collections." The Art Museums have actively collected contemporary art since the early twentieth century. Over the years, these holdings have grown significantly, prompting the recent creation of a curatorial department of modern and contemporary art. "The renovation of the Sert Gallery furthers the department of Visual and Environmental Studies’ longstanding commitment to the education of Harvard students in the visual arts," said Professor Ellen Phelan, Chair of the VES department and Director of the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts. "We are very pleased that the joint efforts of the Art Museums, the department of VES, and our colleague Peter Rose have reinvigorated this space where exhibitions can both supplement and complement the pedagogical goals of the department and broaden the awareness of contemporary art among the larger Harvard community.

This book highlights research findings related to mathematics courses, course selections and career choices. It is suggested that students, parents and educators understand the significance of a solid foundation in mathematics as a key to college and career success.
This book focuses on the natural curiosity of children with activities for ages 5 through 13. The activities are based on the idea that teaching and learning occur naturally when parents and children do simple things together.
This book provides examples of simple science activities that parents can do with their children.
Helps answer the questions that parents and others who care for children in elementary and junior high school often ask about homework. Included are practical ideas for helping children complete homework assignments successfully. Some of the ideas in this book may also be helpful for high school students.

Environmental Surveys and Diagnostics Environmental factors including moisture, temperature and light are among the most significant mechanisms in the deterioration of works of art. Moisture in particular, and its effect on the building fabric, is one of the most important elements in the deterioration of in-situ monuments and wall paintings. The key to the successful long term conservation of such vulnerable objects is the prevention of deterioration rather than treatment once damage has already occurred. In order to control the underlying causes of deterioration, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the factors involved, and it is for this reason that the investigation of the environmental conditions has become a key element of preventative conservation. When moisture is encountered in historic buildings it is often described using the generic term damp . However, without a clear comprehension of the various types of moisture which are contributing to the damp the chances of successfully controlling it are low. Indeed, mis-diagnosis of moisture related problems is all too common and the implementation of incorrect control systems (such as heating, ventilation or drainage) is not only costly but can exacerbate the problem. In the worst cases, following successful diagnosis, it may be necessary to replace the new control system leading to yet further cost and delay in preventing the deterioration of the work of art. It is for this reason that where moisture related problems are suspected, an environmental survey is becoming a standard first step in tackling the problem.

  • Regulations 1 Introduction 1.1. Background The Republic of Uzbekistan which is at present carrying out a major reform in economy and socially oriented policy, aimed at ensuring sustainable development, pays special attention to the establishment of a management system based on the implementation of up-to-date approaches and information technologies, and special programmes worked out by competent international organisations. Agenda 21, Chapter 40 on information for decision-making outlines the needs of improved capacities for information management to make environmental information better accessible. UNEP's Division of Environment Information and Assessment (DEIA) mandate is "to provide the world community with improved access to meaningful data and information, and to help increase the capacity of governments to use environmental information for decision-making and action planning for sustainable human development". To meet these needs UNEP/DEIA is providing assistance to developing countries and countries with economies in transition to strengthen their environmental data and information management capacities. Programme outputs will be an operational global environmental information network. The UNEP approach consists of four stages of activities (Assessment - Feasibility - Implementation - Operational) for which guidelines have been developed. Among these stages, the assessment will give the first broad overview of the environmental information situation in the country.
