    September 25, 2002 Sandia Environmental Restoration Project Earns Green Zia Award from New Mexico Since 1997, several tons of potential wastes have been diverted, recycled or re-used, avoiding more than $1 million in disposal costs for the project. Currently, the Project is working with the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) to establish a schedule for completion of the clean-up activities by 2006. A public comment period on the new schedule, which is part of a Corrective Action Order, is currently under way.

    A 'Town Hall Meeting' on paper . . . Norris Wildflower Walks Scheduled
    March 25, 2003 will hold its 20th annual spring wildflower walks at the River Bluff TVA Small Wild Area on the Norris Dam Reservation on two Saturdays, March 29 and April 5. The guided walks will begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each Saturday at the Small Wild Area, which is located along the Clinch River west of Norris Dam. The walks are free and are hosted by the TVA Natural Areas Program. Also cooperating in the event are Ijams Nature Center, Norris Dam State Park, and the Friends of Norris Dam State Park. The trail is a moderately difficult 3.2-mile loop and is known for a spectacular array of spring wildflowers, especially yellow trout lilies, celandine poppies, bloodroot, spring beauties, and toothwort.

    Defense Environmental Forum Scheduled for Feb. 5, 2003
    Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz will deliver remarks on the impacts of encroachment on military training and readiness at the opening breakfast of the Defense Environmental Forum Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at 7:45 a.m. EST. The forum will be held in Room 155, George C. Marshall Hall, National Defense University, located at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. Other defense officials participating in the Forum include Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. John M. Keane; Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Installations and Environment, Raymond F. DuBois; Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Readiness, Dr. Paul W. Mayberry; and National Defense University President, Vice Adm. Paul G. Gaffney. The Forum theme, "Balancing Mission Needs and Environmental Stewardship to Sustain the Training and Testing Landscape," will be discussed among senior DoD officials and representatives from the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the U.S. General Accounting Office, the Department of Interior, the Marine Mammal Commission, The Sierra Club, The Conservation Fund, the Land Trust Alliance, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and other governmental and private sector organizations.
