    Malabo, formerly Santa Isabel, city, Equatorial Guinea, the country's capital, and largest community, a port on the Gulf of Guinea. It is located on the northern coast of Bioko Island (formerly Fernando Póo) near the equator. It is the nation's chief administrative and economic center; exports include locally produced cocoa, copra, coffee, timber, and fish products. The city was founded by the British in 1827 as Port Clarence, or Clarencetown, and was used until the early 1840s as a base for suppressing the slave trade. Renamed Santa Isabel, it later became the capital of Spanish Guinea and subsequently of the Spanish overseas province of Fernando Póo. The city was made the capital of newly independent Equatorial Guinea in 1968. Its present name was adopted in 1973. Population (1990 estimate) 30,000.

    Spanish Population: Current president: Teodoro Obiang Nguema (since 1979) GDP per capita: 1500 US$ Geography Location: Central Africa, inmost in the Gulf of Guinea. Equatorial Guinea consists of a larger continental part (Río Muni), bordering to Cameroon in the north an Gabon to the south and east. Further, the country consists of the island of Bioko (former Fernando Poo) off Douala (Cameroon), the island of Annobón in the Atlantic Ocean and some smaller islands (Corisco, Elobey, etc.) off the Río Muni coast. See map. Capital: Bata (since 2000, before Malabo) Surface: 28.051 km (of which Río Muni consumes 26.000 km Coastline: 296 km Highest point: Pico Basile (on Bioko) 3,008 m Climate: Tropical rainforest climate, hot and humid the whole year. Although there is rain throughout the year, some rainy seasons can be observed. In Río Muni, rain is heaviest from March to May and from September to November. On Bioko, rains are heaviest from October to November. Natural hazards: Violent windstorms and flash floods.
