January 18, 2003 DAVID O'CONNOR IS NAMED EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR
The Olympic eventer is the first in the sport to take the title twice After a remarkable year, David O'Connor , 41, of The Plains, VA, has been named as USA Equestrian's 2002 Equestrian of the Year . O'Connor is the first two-time winner of this award in the history of the sport. A stellar horseman, O'Connor was chosen from a group of eight of the country's most outstanding athletes that were already bestowed the title of Equestrians of Honor. The eventer first won the award in 2000 largely for his individual gold medal winning performance at the Sydney Olympics, where he rode Custom Made, an Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Joe Zada. While at the games, O'Connor turned in the best eventing dressage score in Olympic history when he opened the individual competition with a score of 29.00 penalties. He was the first U.S. athlete to take the gold medal in the sport since 1984. This past year has also brought significant achievements. His Olympic gold medal horse, Custom Made, carried him to victory once again at Fair Hill International. Before the competition, O'Connor announced the event would be the last for the 17 year-old prize-winning gelding. At Radnor Hunt International, he also won the USA National Two-Star Eventing Championship.

    Press Release:
JOIN THE GROWING RANKS OF LEGEND SUPPORTERS
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kansas, April 2001- David and Karen O'Connor, two of the nation's most celebrated equestrians, have signed an agreement with Bayer Corporation to join the Legend (hyaluronate sodium) Injectable Solution team of spokesmen and women. Beginning this year, they will add their personal endorsement of Legend, the only sodium hyaluronate approved for intravenous administration to treat equine joint disease. "We're extremely delighted to welcome the O'Connors to our team," said Dr. Alfred Amend, Bayer vice president, Marketing and Sales. "One of the primary reasons they agreed to speak for Legend is because they use the product and believe in it. And with their track records, that says a great deal to other equestrians." David O'Connor's track record is the stuff of which legends are made. He not only won the first Olympic Gold Medal for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) since 1984 at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he turned in the best score in Olympic eventing history on Custom Made, a 15-year-old Irish Thoroughbred gelding. David also made history by sharing an Olympic Medal (Team Bronze) with his wife and teammate Karen for the second time. They shared the eventing team Silver at the 1996 Olympic Games.

THE HISTORY OF EQUESTRIAN SPORTS IN NEW ZEALAND The Governing Body of Equestrian Sport in this Country is the New Zealand Equestrian Federation
Each discipline - horse trials (or eventing), show jumping and dressage - independently administers its own affairs, with representatives from each on the NZEF Council, and on the Federation Committee. Any person competing must be a member and horses must be registered for official competitions. The New Zealand Horse Society was founded in 1950, to administer what was then the new Federation Equestrian Internationale show jumping sport - hitherto in this country, jumping had been of the "round the ring " variety, and most of its adherents hunted in winter. Dressage and horse trials were unknown as such. Overseas in Europe, the heart of all three disciplines, the majority of the competitors were cavalry officers although there had been some prominent civilian show jumping riders in Britain in the 20's, 30's and 40'5 up until the second world war. By the late 1940's, and particularly after the Olympic Games in London, show jumping started to attract civilians, and the Duke of Beaufort made Badminton available for the British eventors to " and better their dismal 1948 Olympic performance. Dressage was still a European sport.

Official WEG Website Jerez de la Frontera, Spain – September 24, 2002 – The United States Equestrian Team (USET) made history at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, September 11-22. U.S. riders, drivers and vaulters won a total of eight medals, doubling the U.S.’s best previous performance. The final tally for the U.S. was three Gold, three Silver and two Bronze medals, by far the best U.S. performance at any World Equestrian Games. U.S. teams won World Championship medals in six of the seven disciplines, doing better than any country, including France, who won seven medals in four disciplines, and Germany, who did win nine medals, but in only three disciplines. “This is a proud moment for all Americans,” said USET President Armand Leone, Jr. “Not only does this record-setting performance speak volumes about the ability, dedication and hard work of our athletes and their support staff, but it is also a tribute to the many thousands of Americans whose contributions to the USET helped provide the resources needed to put our athletes in a position to get the job done.”

NRHA leader impressed by reining’s growth
By L.A. POMEROY Sunday, November 10, 2002 How many presidents wear cowboy hats? In July, one of them visited the Three-County Fairgrounds. No, not the one in the White House but that other president, who heads the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA): Brian Dygert of Greenville, N.C. Dygert was in Northampton judging the Northeast Reining Horse Classic, one of two shows held at the fairgrounds as qualifiers for year-end championships. The Classic offers thousands of dollars in prize money for a sport that 20 years ago was considered little more than flashy moves by Hollywood cowboys in Western movies. Things have changed. In 1998, reining became the first Western riding discipline in history accepted to the United States Equestrian Team (USET), the national organization responsible for training and funding equestrian athletes for international competition. In 2000, recognition by the International Equestrian Federation opened the door for possible inclusion as an Olympic sport as soon as Athens, Greece in 2004. Reining is a non-timed event in which the athletic ability of a ranch-type horse is judged through the execution of any of nine approved patterns. including small circles, large, fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs, 360-degree spins and sliding stops.
