Harrison took charge of the contest in the opening round and increased his advantage in every subesquent round, winning by a 30-16 point decision. But despite the convincing nature of his performance, it was revealed shortly before the bout that the 28-year-old Englishman was suffering from an injured knuckle in his left hand. But he was able to dominate the battle using his right jab and through a debilitating body attack which took its effect on the Kazakhstan fighter during the final round. Harrison started slowly and actually found himself two points down after the first minute of the contest.

Sunday, October 1 Upset sees jump-off for medals Jenny MacArthur From Jenny MacArthur in Sydney Nobody could accuse the Olympic showjumping event of running to form. In a drama-filled final day at the windswept Horsley Park arena, Holland gained their first Olympic showjumping individual gold medal when Jeroen Dubbeldam, on Sjiem, a horse that had never even won a grand prix, relegated his countryman Albert Voorn, on Lando, to the silver medal after a three-horse jump-off. Khaled Al Eid, a former pupil of John Whitaker, brought Saudi Arabia their first ever Olympic equestrian medal when he and Khasm Al Aan, the horse on which he was runner-up to Whitaker in the British Grand Prix at Hickstead in July, took the bronze. In a startling end to the competition, world champion Rodrigo Pessoa, of Brazil, and the clear favourite, crashed out of the contest when his horse Baloubet du Rouet had three refusals at Fence 8a, an oxer. His exit prompted the jump-off among the three riders on four faults. The unexpected line-up of medal winners prompted an emotional press conference, with Dubbeldam, a 27-year-old riding instructor, and Voorn, 44, a former three-day-event rider, both in tears. Voorn spoke for both of them: “This is a dream come true. One very good rider said that neither of us were good enough to succeed here. Now we have both won medals.”

Monday, October 2 Wanted: riders with attitude Jenny MacArthur From Jenny MacArthur in Sydney While Britain basked in her best Olympic Games since 1924 - with many sports showing a prompt return for their lottery funding - the equestrian teams, with the notable exception of the silver medal-winning three-day-event team, all underperformed. The dressage team, which had hoped to reach the top five finished eighth (out of nine). The showjumpers, who had realistic expectations of a medal, also finished eighth. The individual showjumping contest on Sunday - in which Geoff Billington’s 24th place on It’s Otto was the best of the three British riders - concluded a dismal second week. "There are lessons to be learnt - we need to go home and analyse what went wrong here and put in place a strategy for Athens" John Tulloch, the outgoing President of the British Equestrian Federation, said. Jane Kidd, the chairman of the dressage selectors, who had thought that “the medal zone” would be within the dressage riders’ grasp after the structured training programme that lottery money has enabled them to introduce also spoke of the need for a “re-think”. No blame can be attached to the management and preparation of the horses. The extra funding had contributed to the “five-star” comfort which the horses had enjoyed on the flight and tip-top veterinary care throughout the build-up to the Games - with all the most up-to-date equipment. The training facilities at the Horsley Park equestrian centre were second to none. Mary King, who had been one of the favourites for a medal in the individual dressage competition but finished eighth, said that her horse, Star Appeal, felt ready to compete within a week of arriving.

Host Cities of the Summer Olympic Games
by
Harvey Abrams, BS, MAT, Ph.d/abd.
The modern Olympic Games are always hosted by a city - not by a country.
The ancient Olympic Games were always in the same place OLYMPIA a sacred city in western Greece known as ELIS . The Games were a religious event, a FESTIVAL that honored the Greek God ZEUS . The ancient Games were hosted by the ELIANS who were the guardians of the sanctuary to Zeus. They tried and succeeded for most of a thousand years to be neutral , that is, un-allied to other Greek city-states, similar to modern day Switzerland. The modern Games (just like the ancient Games) are QUADRENNIAL, meaning they are held every four years. This four year period of time is known as an OLYMPIAD . To the ancient Greeks it (an OLYMPIAD) was their calender, a way of designating time.
Just as in ancient Greece, the modern Olympic Games are held every fourth year at the end of the Olympiad. The Games of the First Modern Olympiad were in 1896, in Athens, Greece. However, during the early years of the Modern Olympic Movement there was a disagreement over who should host the Olympic Games. The Greek Government wanted the Games in Athens permanently while Pierre de Coubertin, the French "founder" of the Modern Olympic Games, wanted the Games to rotate around the world to major sporting cities. So the Olympic Games of the second Olympiad were held in Paris, France and the Games of the third Olympiad were in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The Greeks went ahead and scheduled their own Olympic Games in 1906, a tenth anniversary celebration of the 1896 Games. At that time these Games were considered "official," in spite of the calender - not being a

FEI Important Dates

  • On 28 May, a meeting was held in Lausanne, Switzerland, chaired by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Baron de Coubertin, with representatives of ten Nations present. The following day, representatives of the United States, France, Japan and Sweden decided on the constitution of an International Equestrian Federation.
On 24 November, the first Congress of the new International Equestrian Federation was held in Paris, with Belgium, Denmark, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Norway and Sweden present. Baron du Teil of France, was elected as the FEI's first President. Cdt Georges Hector, also a Frenchman, became the first Secretary.
For the first time, the Olympic Equestrian events - for the third time on the programme of the Olympic Games - were held under the jurisdiction of the FEI.
The first FEI Dressage Championship outside of the Olympic Games was organised in Lucerne (SUI), in the form of a Grand Prix de Dressage. There were no FEI Championships in the other disciplines held before World War II.

Inspired by the chariot races of the ancient Greek games, it's also the only Olympic sport where humans and animals are teammates. Did You Know? Just like people, horses need a valid passport to travel internationally. The last time the Summer Games were held in Australia ( Melbourne 1956 ), strict quarantine laws forced organizers to schedule the equestrian events in Stockholm. In 2000, however, the horses will be allowed to make the trip to Sydney. In the dressage event (derived from the French verb "to train") a horse-and-rider team receives scores based on set movements and a freestyle dance routine done by the horse. The event traces its routes to classical Greek horsemanship, and to the knights of the Middle Ages who considered the maneuvers a valuable training method. In fact, only commissioned officers of the military could compete in Olympic dressage competitions from its inclusion in

Gladstone, NJ—November 1, 2002—Sydney Olympic Gold Medal horse Custom Made was named United States Equestrian Team (USET) Athlete of the Month for October after he carried David O’Connor to victory in his farewell competition at the 2002 Fair Hill International Eventing Championship, October 24-27. O’Connor had announced that the Fair Hill International would be the final event for the 17-year-old Thoroughbred who had carried him to the individual Gold Medal at Sydney. O’Connor and Custom Made topped a starting field of seventy-eight horses from six countries to win both the Fair Hill International CCI*** and the United States Equestrian Team Eventing Three-Star Fall Championship. Custom Made has had an unparalleled competitive record over eight years with O’Connor before his retirement at the 2002 Fair Hill International. At Sydney, O'Connor won the U.S.’s first Olympic Gold Medal in equestrian since 1984, finishing with the best score in Olympic history. Prior to that, Custom Made won the USET Three Star Spring Championship at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event in 1995, finished third at the Badminton CCI**** in England in 1996, placed fifth at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and won the Badminton CCI**** in 1997.

News Galloping gold medallist prepares to make Olympic history Having won gold in Barcelona in 92 and then Atlanta in 96 in the Three-Day Event, the Australian team is going into the Sydney Games as gold medal favourites with the chance to create Olympic history. "Never before has one country taken out the gold in three consecutive Olympics in this event – I believe that we can do it this year," said Matt Ryan. A poorly understood sport, elite equestrian competition is the ultimate team sport. A horse and a rider work together for years to hone feats of grace, daring, agility and speed. It is the only sport of its kind where men and women compete on a completely equal level. The Three-Day event of equestrian competition has often been described as one of the most physically and mentally exacting sports, second only, to formula one racing. It combines the three disciplines of dressage, cross-country and showjumping, rewarding the horse that can excel at dressage one day and gallop flat-out cross-country the next. Matt believes that Australia has a very strong international team and there is no reason why they cannot take out the gold again this year. "In the last few years, the ‘eventing’ scene in Australia has gone crazy. The expansion in the sport is unbelievable – we have never had so many riders looking so strong," said Matt.

Olympic sport since 1900 ABOUT
Equestrian events were included in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1900 and then in 1912, in a format very similar to that which will be used at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
In the past, the three-day event (Eventing) was restricted to military officers, while the jumping and dressage competitions were open to civilians, but only a handful of civilian riders competed up to 1948. Up to that time, the growth of modern sport had been rapid, but relatively few competitors were involved in international competitions. They all knew each other and the judges and were accepting of local variations to the fairly simple rules which existed. With the inclusion of the sport in the Olympic Games, it became obvious that some internationally recognised rules for the three Olympic disciplines were essential. In May 1921, delegates from 10 national equestrian organisations met in Lausanne to discuss the formation of an international federation.
Equestrian consists of three disciplines: Jumping, Dressage and Eventing (Three-Day Event).

Korzeniowski walks into Olympic history books
By STEVEN DOWNES
SYDNEY (September 28, 2000 11:00 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Poland's Robert Korzeniowski walked his way into the history books in Sydney on Friday morning, when he became the first man in Olympic history to win the 20km and 50km race walk double, retaining his title in the longest event on the athletics programme - another historic first. Latvia's Agars Fadejevs took silver, while Mexican Joel Sanchez finished with the bronze. Korzeniowski who took the event to a new level. The 32-year-old Krakow sports teacher won the 20km walk here last week in controversial style - when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was disqualified 11 minutes after he had crossed the line in the belief he had won the gold. But Friday's triumph was much more clear-cut. Korzeniowski finished in 3hr 42min 22sec, removing his sun glasses to reveal the sweat on his face in the baking Sydney sun.
