Eritrea: Government expects more Deportees, 3/31/99
ERITREA: Government expects more deportees as displaced numbers grow NAIROBI, 31 March (IRIN) - The Eritrean government is planning for the arrival of 50,000 Eritreans from Ethiopia during 1999. They would join over 55,000 who have already arrived since the outbreak of the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea last May, officals say. In the latest explusions, the Eritrean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday announced that 1,501 Eritreans were sent back from Ethiopia over the weekend. The deportations take place despite ongoing clashes on the ground along the common border. Eritrean officials say there are about 75,000 Eritreans still in Ethiopia.. A spokesman for the Eritrean Relief and Refugee Commission (ERREC) told IRIN today that the government's latest appeal for all war-affected populations targets up to 550,000 people in need. Since last year, donor interest "has grown" in supporting humanitarian programmes for the displaced, the ERREC official said, while mentioning that last year's ERREC appeal was about one-third funded. From the UN, UNDP is donating about US $2.2 million to the displaced persons' programme. The human cost of the war in the Horn of Africa is enormous. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea claim to have killed, wounded or captured tens of thousands of troops. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced over the last 10 months because of the conflict. Border villages and towns have been evacuated, where previously co-habiting communities from the respective countries have become divided and homeless. The latest appeals and figures from Ethiopia and Eritrea put the expected caseload of war-displaced civilians in need of humanitarian assistance in 1999 at around 931,000 people. (Ethiopia recently upped its figures to about 381,000 displaced people).

Posted to the web November 13, 2002 Asmara The Eritrean government has called up more than 350 recent graduates of the University of Asmara to report this coming Friday, 15 November for compulsory national service. The call-up notice for the graduates of 2002 was carried by the state-run Hadas Eritrea newspaper on Tuesday. It was the first time that students who had not reported for national service were specifically named, listing them by gender and the courses of studies they had completed. The notice also pointed out that by not reporting, the students had failed to perform their national duty and were accordingly in violation of the law. "I'm so upset, I can't even explain it," said one of the students listed. She added that most students were no longer willing to do national service, because they did not know its duration, or what the punishment might be if they refused.

Posted to the web September 18, 2002 Nairobi The international human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has called on the Eritrean authorities to immediately release a number of political dissidents and journalists who have been in detention for a year. "These arbitrary detentions place Eritrea in contravention of international and regional human rights treaties which the government has only recently ratified," it said. "They also foster a climate of impunity on the part of the authorities." In a 24-page report, entitled 'Eritrea: Arbitrary detentions of government critics and journalists', the organisation on Wednesday described the detainees as "prisoners of conscience".

Amnesty International today called on the Eritrean authorities to immediately and unconditionally end the unlawful detention of dozens of prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders, as it released a new report Eritrea: Arbitrary detentions of government critics and journalists.
"These arbitrary detentions place Eritrea in contravention of international and regional human rights treaties which the government has only recently ratified. They also foster a climate of impunity on the part of authorities," Amnesty International said.
Critics of the government and journalists from the private press have been held in secret incommunicado detention for one year now, since the authorities started a sudden clampdown on growing public dissent in September 2001.
