Community Consolidated School District 146 offers a variety of programs to its students. Below you will find information about the programs offered through Special Services , and about our ORE and Band programs. Special Services Programs All disabled students between the ages of 3 and 15 who are the responsibility of School District 146 enjoy the rights and privileges equal to those of all other students in our district. It is the district's primary goal to help all students become contributing members of society, working and interacting together in an inclusionary process. While the district recognizes that there may be some students whose disabilities require that their needs be met outside of the district's schools, the district attempts to include disabled students, to the fullest extent possible, in the educational environment they would be in if they had no disability. This practice is referred to as "inclusion". However, inclusion is a philosophy, not a program. Each disabled student has an individualized educational program (IEP), designed to meet his or her individual needs. A full continuum of programs, support and services are available to meet each student's individual needs. The district also works with other agencies to ensure that all disabled students' needs are met.

Volunteer ESL Tutoring Program
In order for refugees to thrive in our community, they must develop basic English language skills. Bridge's ESL Tutor Training Program has opened the door of English comprehension and literacy for hundreds of new arrivals since its inception only two years ago.
Bridge trains ESL volunteers who have committed to tutoring a new arrival as part of their church sponsorship team. We also train volunteers in the community who would like to be paired with a refugee who has special needs (example: vocational ESL for a specific job, Citizenship Test preparation, etc.).
Bridge provides a six-hour training for all volunteer tutors, and then each tutor is "matched" with a learner whose schedule is compatible. The ESL Coordinator makes a preliminary assessment of the learner's proficiency and helps the tutor establish a base level. She will also introduce tutor and learner. Finally, our ESL Coordinator serves as a resource/technical support person throughout the tutoring period. She performs the follow-up evaluations and intervenes if there are any problems. You are encouraged to contact her if you have any questions, problems or comments about your experience as a tutor.
If you would like to make a three-month commitment to tutoring a refugee, please call Bridge Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. OR fill out our

Attending to special educational needs is an area currently being further
developed at CMIS. For many years the school has catered, via its ESL program, for the needs of international students whose mother tongue is not English. We are currently planning for CMIS to broaden its program to include other special learning needs such as learning disabilities or special gifting.
E.S.L. - English As A Second Language At C.M.I.S. we recognize the needs of those international students who do not have English as their mother tongue. To integrate, learn, and participate fully in class, it is essential that the children learn to master the English Language medium used at C.M.I.S. Special English language tuition (E.S.L) is offered for Elementary and Middle School students who need it (Grades 1 - 8). The basic ESL program involves separate language learning classes provided while the child is gradually integrated into their regular grade level class activities. This program allows the child one hour per day in English learning that is skills based and caters to the individual needs of each student. The lessons focus on :

Using the Internet to teach English for Special Purposes (ESP) - Writing Lesson for Business English One of the problems that faces many English as Second Language (read ESP, ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESOL, TOEFL etc.) teachers is that students expect the teacher to be incredibly knowledgeable about everything ! By using the methods below in the example lesson - actually you will probably need at least two lessons - you can give your students "real world" English in their specific field, help them improve their industrial jargon AND understand how companies in their sector express themselves in written English. You will also pick up quite a lot of useful materials that can be used in future lessons. It's quite a nice little exercise for everyone involved! The Internet offers some truly unique opportunities that can give teaching new impetus and be quite a lot of fun for the students. One of these new opportunities is the ability to translate an entire Internet page from English into a target language, or, vice-versa, translate from another language into English. This ability to translate from English into a target language is especially important in business English. Learners can quickly improve specific target vocabulary, improve writing style. Most importantly, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) students get a feel for how English is used in their applied field.

For that reason, class sizes are kept at an average of 14 and a maximum of 20 students. Given these low student-teacher ratios, a trained, experienced teacher is the person best able to address a student's specific learning challenges. Thus, TAISM is an inclusive school, with all students receiving services in a mainstream classroom. This approach is in line with the current best practices in United States schools. Every student can learn if given appropriate opportunities. Teachers in TAISM classrooms differentiate instruction, adapting and modifying their lessons to meet the needs of their students. TAISM also coordinates with specialists in the community to work in partnership - teacher, specialist, parents and students - to help all children succeed.
