Primary Applications
There are many situations in which independent study provides the best or only effective means of teaching history.
  • Where the student's learning level significantly differs from that of classmates
  • Where physical circumstances prevent classroom participation The periodical format and worksheet structure of Our Land Publications make this an ideal program for such instruction.
  • Gifted and Talented (GATE) Whether a specific class for gifted and talented students is established or those students are included in the conventional elementary grade classroom, Our Land Publications are designed to provide them an organized curriculum which may be studied independently. Since lessons may be added or omitted without breaking continuity, students may work at their own pace. Since the programs are not "dumbed down," gifted students are challenged by content and do not become bored.

    About Leigh Hall...
Leigh Hall is a doctoral student at Michigan State University in the Department of Teacher Education where she specializes in Literacy. Before coming to Michigan, Leigh was a middle school language arts and social studies teacher in Houston, Texas. It was this experience that introduced her to working with students who had a variety of abilities and needs in the areas of reading and writing. Leigh has experience in working with children who have learning disabilities and who perform below grade level. She is also certified to work with students who do not speak English as their native language. Upon completing her degree from Michigan State, Leigh hopes to start a career as an Assistant Professor and to do research that addresses students who struggle with reading. She hopes that what she learns both now and in the future can be passed on to teachers in a way that is useful to both them and their students.

    Counseling Services
The counselor works as an integral part of the educational process, assisting students with issues affecting personal and academic development, consulting with teachers and parents, and monitoring the progress of students. The work of the counselor in the Middle School is directly related to the philosophy and mission statement. Services are offered in individual and group settings and are remedial and preventative in nature. A curriculum for affective or character education has been developed, listing skills in the areas of emotional, social and career awareness.
The counselor enrolls the students and supervises the orientation of new students to the school. The counselor also works closely with other members of the school community to monitor and create a positive learning environment. Students can see the counselor by requesting an appointment time. Parents may call for an appointment to discuss their child's progress at any time. The years of early adolescence present special challenges as well as opportunities for all members of the family. The counselor is available to also consult with the grade level teams, provide crisis intervention, present classroom guidance lessons and assist with special needs and studies in academic policies and parent and faculty in-services.
A partial list of services which are provided by the counselor include academic guidance, individual counseling, liaison with grade and subject area teams, career education, parent consultation and education, classroom presentations, group counseling, monitoring of academic progress and liaison with the Student Study Team.
