What is plagiarism?
Marquette High students may be familiar with the following passage from Write for College by Patrick Sebranek, Verne Meyer, and Dave Kemper: Plagiarism is the presentation of another's writer's ideas or words as if they were your own, without acknowledging the source. Most students understand what plagiarism is and do their very best to avoid it. Even so, once you have researched your topic, it may be difficult to make the distinction between your own voice and the voices of those you've consulted . . . Plagiarism and other forms of "intellectual currency" theft are receiving legal scrutiny with the advent of the Internet . . . While you may not think "borrowing" a phrase or two from an author for your research paper is on a par with pirating millions of dollars' worth of rock albums, the principle is the same (297).

Home Contact Us Faculty Philosophy ... Academic Honors Environmental Ethics In 1971 the very first course in the world in Environmental Ethics was offered right here at UW-SP. As the world was waking up to the environmental problems that we were being forced to face, ethically inclined and environmentally aware philosophers began to envision and embrace a confluence of their academic interest with their environmental concern. Since those humble beginnings, environmental ethics has (click any image to enlarge) grown into not only a burgeoning academic discipline but also a field much respected in other academic disciplines and non-academic environmental circles alike. And it all began here at UW-SP. We have designed this program to complement nearly any course of study at UW-SP, especially programs in the College of Natural Resources. Moreover, our program is unique and cutting-edge. No other school in the state, nor as far as we are aware, in the country has such an undergraduate program.

20. Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Covers metaethics, normative ethics and applied ethics in depth.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/e/ethics.htm
Ethics The field of ethics, also called moral philosophy, involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. Philosophers today usually divide ethical theories into three general subject areas: metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. Metaethics investigates where our ethical principles come from, and what they mean. Are they merely social inventions? Do they involve more than expressions of our individual emotions? Metaethical answers to these questions focus on the issues of universal truths, the will of God, the role of reason in ethical judgments, and the meaning of ethical terms themselves. Normative ethics involves a more practical task, which is to arrive at moral standards that regulate right and wrong conduct. Should I borrow my roommate's car without first asking him? Should I steal food to support my starving family? Ideally, these moral questions could be immediately answered by consulting the moral guidelines provided by normative theories. Finally, applied ethics involves examining specific controversial issues, such as abortion, infanticide, animal rights, environmental concerns, homosexuality, capital punishment, or nuclear war. By using the conceptual tools of metaethics and normative ethics, discussions in applied ethics try to resolve these controversial issues. The lines of distinction between metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics are often blurry. For example, the issue of abortion is an applied ethical topic since it involves a specific type of controversial behavior. But it also depends on more general normative principles, such as the right of self-rule and the right to life, which are litmus tests for determining the morality of that procedure. The issue also rests on metaethical issues such as, "where do rights come from?" and "what kind of beings have rights?"
