42. A Primer On The Ethics Of "intellectual Property"
This primer provides a general framework for freeing any information covered under copyright and patent laws.
http://www.ram.org/ramblings/philosophy/fmp/copying_primer.html
A primer on the ethics of "intellectual property"
on this website and elsewhere , is copiable without restrictions. Over the last several years, especially after I wrote the Free Music Philosophy in mid-1993, I have been arguing about the so-called "rights to intellectual property" on the Internet. Generally, if you're on the same wavelength, the argument proceeds well and is even illuminating at times. But sometimes you're arguing with people who lack the fundamentals in logic or intellectual property issues and pointing out their lack of logic leads to the reverse accusation and the argument degenerates into a situation where each person accuses the other of being illogical. Sometimes, people (intentionally or otherwise) misunderstand you, because you have to make arguments you've spent years thinking about in a few posts, usually under some time constraint. This is not meant as an insult to anyone; some of it I think stems from using this medium for communication. What I have done here is provide some logical rationale for many of the statements I might make, in a question and answer format. Why is the abridgement of the [freedom of] copying, use, distribution, and modification of published information unethical?

The aim of this programme is to apply the skills and insights derived from traditional, mainstream philosophy to major contemporary social problems which may not themselves count as 'philosophical' in the narrow sense of the word. These include such problems as: new developments in medicine and biotechnology; the allocation of scarce medical resources; toleration and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities; family and personal relationships; standards of morality in the conduct of the professions, commerce, and politics; the challenges to democracy posed by terrorism and the rise of nationalism; environmental ethics; and the moral values relevant to education. All students take a core module of seminars covering ethical theory and the broad areas of applied ethics, along with four option modules. Options available include Values and the Environment; Community and Conflict; Bioethics; Social Values and Education; Ethics and Organisation; Philosophy of Law; Theories of Political Violence; and Work, Economics, and Christian Ethics. Students may, if they wish, select options and a dissertation so as to specialise in Health Care Ethics or Management Ethics. In addition, candidates may attend selected lecture modules within the department.

The Practical Application of the Theories of Kant and Mill
send me this paper

Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill are philosophers who addressed the issues of morality in terms of how moral traditions are formed. Kant's theory of categorical imperative states that humanity is of ultimate value and should be regarded as an end in itself. Mill's 'principle of utility' or 'the greatest happiness principle' sought for the systematic coherency of ethical philosophy through the consequences of actions as the consideration determining their morality, presupposed by the acquisition of happiness as opposed to the avoidance of pain. This 6 page paper examines the practical application of the two theories. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Environmental Ethics/Philosophy This page is my final project in the Environmental Studies Capstone Seminar at Swarthmore College which is required to complete an Environmental Studies Concentration . It is intended to provide a variety of sources for information about a range of topics in environmental ethics/philosophy. You may view the list of topics considered during the class by going to the index, see the essays we read by following the essays link, go to a page of annotated web links I found applicable to each topic (through links), or read papers my classmates and I wrote after reflecting on the listed essays (student papers). Section I of each page addresses more obviously philosophically-oriented ethical questions (such as: What has intrinsic value?), wheras Section II considers places where ethics are applied to practical environmental issues. I hope this proves useful to you! 50. Spinoza's Ethics
Brief summary of some aspects of Spinoza's moral philosophy.
http://angelfire.com/md2/timewarp/spinoza.html
Spinoza’s Ethics Spinoza’s Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata Ethics demonstrated in geometrical order ) is based on a deductive method derived from Euclidean geometry. Spinoza maintains that the validity of ethical ideas can be demonstrated by mathematical argument or proof. Spinoza asserts that ethics can be based on a geometric model in which axioms and propositions follow each other with logical necessity. This reflects the view that ethical truth has the same logical necessity as mathematical truth. Spinoza sees ethics as a rational system corresponding to the rational nature of the universe. The Ethics is divided into five parts: Part I. "Of God;" Part II. "Of the Nature and Origin of the Mind;" Part III. "Of the Origin and Nature of the Emotions;" Part IV. "Of Human Bondage, or Of the Strength of the Emotions;" Part V. "Of the Power of the Intellect, or Of Human Liberty." Each of the five parts of the Ethics consists of several definitions and axioms, followed by a series of propositions and corollaries. The propositions of Part III are followed by forty-eight definitions of the emotions, including desire, pleasure, pain, love, hatred, hope, fear, despair, joy, disappointment, humility, pride, anger, shame, cruelty, benevolence, etc.

http://www.canndeeapples.com/ethicsphilos.htm
Our Philosophy and Ethics of Breeding: We believe that the primary reason for breeding traditional Siamese and Balinese cats is to preserve, protect and promote these traditional cats by giving special consideration to the genetic and physical health of the breeding queens and stud cats, with special attention to their temperament. We are dedicated to the ideas that bind together the members of the Traditional Cat Association, Inc. who are owners and breeders of these very special cats. These lovely cats must continue to be available to persons who cherish their great beauty, loyalty, and personality as well as excellent general health and longevity. For us, as breeders, this means careful selection of dams and sires to ensure that the kittens will be highest quality pets; healthy, genetically sound, people-oriented, and conforming to the breed standards of the Traditional Cat Association, Inc. We have entered into the breeding of cats out of love of this now very rare type of cat, and personal enjoyment of helping to find the right potential homes for the kittens. The potential buyers, like us, love and understand the special traits of the Traditional Siamese and Balinese cats. To ensure that inappropriate adoptions do not happen, potential buyers are screened.

55. Ethics For Artificial Intelligences
This paper discusses the need to make computers behave as though they themselves were instilled with an appreciation for ethics and means to accomplish this.
http://philosophy.wisc.edu/lang/AIEthics/
Ethics for Artificial Intelligences Chris Lang , Department of Philosophy, UW-Madision According to some authorities, in the next 10-30 years machines will take up most positions of responsibility in our society because they will outperform the humans who previously filled those positions. I argue that using non-terminating hill-climbing algorithms, we can ensure that such machines will learn to behave as though instilled with an appreciation for ethics. Therefore we should aim to develop artificial neural nets with back propagation, genetic algorithms and reinforcement learning, and should avoid expert systems, cellular automata, ID3, logic systems, non-learning Bayes nets, semantic networks, simulated annealing and "early stopping". Promoting Deism and Deists' Communications Worldwide Welcome All Visitors Deism is a belief in God based on reason and nature. More specifically, a it is belief in God that created the universe and set it in motion to run by natural processes (laws), and is based on the observation of orderly nature (universe) and human reason (speculation), rather than on holy books. Generally, it's a rational belief in God without accepting the creeds of any particular traditional religion. Deism is a philosophy that can be a thinking person's religion. It has the attractive features of:
  • Nature as revelation to God is universal without limits of language, location, or time. Encouraging maximum use of science and individualistic rational thinking. Affording personal freedom to seek spirituality and meaning. Providing a fellowship for discussion and support. Having no authoritarian creeds, rituals, or tithes.

58. Essays On Theology And Ethics
A series of articles from a liberal Protestant point of view by Kenneth Cauthen, a retired professor of theology, philosophy, and ethics. The site posits the existence of an impersonal, limited, suffering, struggling deity. This deity's creativity is said to have produced all the varieties of life.

Essays on Theology and Ethics
Kenneth Cauthen
The short essays linked together on this site are written from a liberal theological perspective. More specifically, I am a modernistic liberal or a modernist, as I define those terms. The articles set forth the views of a theologian deeply influenced by modern science, historical studies, cultural relativism, ecological concerns, pragmatism, and the like. They represent what I believe to be persuasive and pertinent for a generation about to enter the 21st century. I employ a form of process-relational thought and am deeply rooted in the Christian (and Baptist) traditions. These essays are tentative expressions but reflect five decades of reading, thinking, and teaching. Long ago Harry Emerson Fosdick defined a liberal as one who wanted to be both "an intelligent modern and a serious Christian." That is my aim and the guiding philosophy of these essays. They represent an honest search for truth and set forth the best I know up to now from all sources. Beyond that I make no claims. I invite comments, criticisms, refutations, suggestions, and corrections.
