Phantomas Passion
European culture returns to decadence of the early 20th century. Frenchmen again guess a children’s riddle they themselves invented. And they do it very seriously.
In France, there is even a Friends of Phantomas association. This is not a sect or a literary circle. The members of the association want to know Phantomas’s origin. According to Phantomas’s friends, people like Fandor or Juve are rare, who believe that they could solve the mystery of this demonic hero.
Phantomas is inconceivable. And he will be inconceivable to the very end. He will resist up to his last breath, and afterwards he will probably turn into a virus annihilating humanity.
One of these days, in Paris, in Pampidou Centre, a seminar devoted to the cult film and to the cult figure took place.
At the seminar, books and web-sites devoted to Phantomas were presented, old films of Claude Chabrol were shown. At the seminar manuscrips of journalists Marceile Allain and Pierre Souvestre who created in 1911 the character considered by Europeans to be embodiment of evil. Souvestre died in 1914, while Allain lived till 1969, though he was always under pressure of this twilight character.
After having carefully studied the main character of the literary works and films, scientists, critics, and specialists in study of literature concluded that today’s politicians see Phantomas in bin Laden, while music lover find him similar to Daft Punk.

MA English Language Teaching Teaching of English as a Foreign Language Other University Language Programme MA in European Culture and Society Europe in the twentieth century has been characterised by a series of upheavals and displacements. War, social, political and economic change, ideological oppositions, and technological developments have all led to widespread experiences of displacement, flux and mutation. These experiences, rooted as they are in historical events such as the Second World War, give rise to a number of interconnected social, political and cultural developments. For these reasons, the approach of the MA in European Culture and Society is interdisciplinary, integrating the study of socio-political and cultural issues in post-war Europe, East and West. In this way, debates concerning, for example, the inheritance of the Enlightenment, engagement and aesthetics, multiculturalism and the 'end of history' thesis are discussed in the context of a range of socio-political developments in the post-war era. The MA is taught in English, but will be of particular interest to graduates who have a good knowledge of another European language.

Course content
The MA comprises three units of study. The first unit consists of the two core modules 'European Debates' and 'Socio-political Developments', both of which are worth 20 credits. The second unit consists of two options, both of which are also worth 20 credits. Finally, there is a dissertation, which will be supervised by one of the teaching team, and is worth 40 credits. This represents a total of 120 credits. The two core modules are mutually reinforcing and introduce a range of debates and sociopolitical developments in post-war Europe. For example, towards the end of the core component debates around Fukuyama's 'end of history' thesis are discussed in the context of the collapse Eastern Bloc communist regimes at the end of the 1980s. Similarly, the decline in faith in a 'Reithian' model of culture is discussed in the context of the success of neo-liberal political and economic regimes from the late 1970s onwards. With the core component as a basis, participants go on to choose two options from a range which covers subjects such as the European novel, European cinema, multiculturalism and human rights, and the European social dimension.

Another such film will be Fred Kelemen's Nightfall , probably appealing to a similar crowd. For a Kinoeye review of his first film

OpenHeritage: Enabling the European Culture Economy
By Gabriele Scali, Flavio Tariffi, Stefano Cuomo, Hub Kockelkorn, Dominique DeLouis and George Mallen - October 2001 OpenHeritage [ ] is a research project funded under the Fifth Framework Programme (Jan 2001 - Dec 2002) aiming to create an IT infrastructure and service to improve access to collections information held by regional museums and galleries. The collections of regionally distributed smaller museums will thus be as attractive and accessible as the larger, better known, museum collections. This "cultural driven" economy could give a significant contribution to the local economic development enabling the enrichment of local touristic and cultural assets.
Overview
It has been pointed out by several surveys that the application of technological solutions to memory institutions in fields such as the multimedia management and valorisation of museum and library collections is failing to express substantive and sustainable economic results for a number of reasons. The main being the lack of a self-supporting economic model for the promotion and exploitation of Cultural Heritage through ICT, and the excessive "technology push" in the use of virtualisation, to the expense of a sound understanding of the global vs. local processes. The result is the improper use of innovation often deployed in an self-referential way.

http://www.gzs.si/ENG/slovenia/history2.htm
Western European Culture in Miniature The new Slovenian state is indeed young, but Slovenes were not born yesterday. They entered European history as a distinct nation some one-and-a-half thousand years ago, when they came to this country from the frozen east to worship the sun, life, and beauty of nature. They crowned their own princes and, in the middle of a field, set them on a throne fashioned from the debris of local Roman ruins. This throne has been preserved right up to the present day, and has been weathered by influences from both the East and the West. For a little over a thousand years the Slovenes lost their independence. They were ruled by Bavarian, Frankish, Czech and Hapsburg masters, and their pagan gods were replaced by the Christian God and the Slav spirit fused irrevocably with the culture of western Europe. Slovene art followed that of Europe from the Romanesque period on, first in church and monastic architecture, and then between the 12th and 15th centuries in the construction of castles and towns. Masters of Slovene Renaissance in sculpture and painting worked side by side with famous Italian artists. In 1992 Slovenia introduced its own currency, which many describe as one of the most attractive in Europe. The banknotes are illustrated with the images of the Renaissance composer Jacobus Gallus, the author of the first Slovene book Primoz Trubar, the historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor, the greatest Slovene poet France Prešeren, the world famous mathematician Jurij Vega, the painter Rihard Jakopic, the architect Joze Plecnik, whose buildings provide ornamentation for numerous European cities, the paintress Ivana Kobilca and the famous Slovenian writer and playwright Ivan Cankar. Their names may sound strange to those of you who are not yet familiar with the Slovene language, but when you come here and get to know their work, you will surely recognise one fact: little Slovenia is a country with an amazingly rich history and culture.

By Puri Ruz. From european culture Digest reports how governments and local authorities may be partly responsible for the early deaths of a people that contributes hugely to Spanish society.
http://www.european-digest.com/ecd02/docs/digest08.htm
500 years of rejection More than one million gypsies, a sixth of the European gypsy, Romany and traveller population, are thought to live in Spain, though many do not appear in censuses. Their treatment by settlers, people who live non-nomadic lives, is as bad, if not worse, than it was five centuries ago. Life expectancy of gypsies is 20 years less than non-gypsies and, as PURI RUÍZ reports, governments and local authorities may be partly responsible for the early deaths of a people that contributes hugely to Spanish society. by Puri Ruíz artwork by Gemma Sabatés (click on picture to view larger version) P resencia Gitana is one of the most active associations in Spain fighting xenophobia. Cosmopolitan, courageous and non-religious, it is trying to redress the balance in a country in which gypsies have been reviled for centuries. During the same period, gypsies have added so much in the way of cultural variety that what they are asking for now seems to be so little. In Spain, the word gitano (gypsy), which stands for identity and nomadism, has always been used as an insult. And the eternal dilemma of the gypsy people has been to choose between survival and the preservation of ancient traditions. Choose the former can mean they lose their roots; fight for the latter has seen them persecuted and killed.
