Pathfinders Biographical Information Using the SJC Library Online Catalog:
Individual biographies can be found by typing the person's name last name first into the search box and then clicking on the Subject search button. For example, to find biographical information about author, Mark Twain, you would type Twain, Mark and then click the Subject search button. (If you click the Author search button you will get a list of books which he has written, not books about him.) The SJC Library does not have individual biographies about every famous person in the world; however, there are collective biographical resources which cover a wide range of well-known people. If you were to type your person's name into the online catalog, it would not lead you to these sources. The following is a list which might be helpful in locating these resources... • 1. Finding Background Information
Collections of statistics, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and area or country handbooks provide data, an overview of a topic and short definitions of terms and ideas. They often contain references to other books and articles which can be used for further research. For example, use these resources to find basic information about the country you will be researching, and to find the names, dates and places of major explorations to choose for your project. Selected examples are: Country Studies/Area Handbook Series catalog link online version through Library of Congress) The Country Studies Series presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. These studies were formerly published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Although some are somewhat out of date, they can provide valuable background information and historical context on many lesser known areas of the world.
