In some cases, exploration was fanned by the quest of knowledge about the world in which Europeans lived, for others, the motive was profit. Still others justified their actions as the logical extension of the Crusades of Christianity against Islam. Men working at sea had much to endure. Cut off from normal life on shore for months, even years, they had to accept cramped conditions, disease and poor food and pay.
