Played July 8th - 28th
With the full team roster picked on April 10, 2002, Max "The Beast" Mirnyi will be the one to lead the team. The World TeamTennis Professional League held it's draft April 3rd and 10th. "I saw Max Mirnyi play last year at the U.S. Open," said Jeff Launius, General Manager. "I watched him play a five-setter against (then No. 1 ranked) Gustavo Kuerten that was just a great match. That was my first exposure to Max Mirnyi. I loved what I saw. Kansas City fans are going to love this guy. He hits rockets."
With Mirnyi's plane-like wingspan, he was the first marquee player to be drafted on April 3, 2002. Mirnyi finished 2001 ranked 34th in the world in singles and has been in the top 40 each of the past two years. He's more accomplished in doubles and won the 2000 U.S. Open doubles championship with Lleyton Hewitt. (Featured in the Kansas City Star on 4/4/02 written by Bob Luder)

will be joined by: Lisa McShea (who is replacing the injured Elena Bovina)

The world lost seven explorers today, two of them female - Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian-born women to make it into space, and Laurel Clark, physician/astronaut. While we mourn with the families and friends of all who were lost, we also celebrate the lives of these courageous men and women. May there be many more such brave explorers to follow in their footsteps.

Primary sources
On this page are primary sources on voyages of discovery that can be found on the web. Primary sources are the texts the travellers themselves wrote on their voyages. Of course these sources are of utmost importance when studying the history of exploration. There is also a part on secondary sources , that is, sources that were written by others than the voyagers themselves, either based on information directly from the voyagers themselves, or on primary sources, which in some cases might be lost afterwards.

Afonso de Albuquerque (14-1515) was a Portuguese soldier and explorer who sailed to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas, a group of Islands in Indonesia) in 1507-1511, trying to monopolize trade with this area; from Europe, he sailed around Africa to the Indian Ocean. He was appointed the Viceroy of India by King Emmanuel in 1509. He forcibly destroyed the Indian city of Calicut in January, 1510, and took Goa (in southern India) in March, 1510, claiming Goa for Portugal. ALDRIN, EDWIN E., JR. Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr. (1930- ) was the second man to walk on the moon. Also known as "Buzz" or "Dr. Rendezvous," Aldrin was the Lunar Module Pilot (July 16-24, 1969) on NASA's Apollo 11 mission. He and Neil Armstrong (the first man on the moon) were on the moon for about 2 hours, collecting rock samples and doing lunar surface experiments. Aldrin's first space mission was Gemini 12, which launched on November 11, 1966; he and Command Pilot James Lovell orbited Earth for 4 days. Aldrin has written many books about his life and his career as an astronaut. AMUNDSEN, ROALD
