INTRODUCTION
Background: Discovered in the 16th century and settled in the mid-18th century, the islands have since been the subject of a territorial dispute, first between Britain and Spain, then between Britain and Argentina. The UK asserted its claim to the islands by establishing a naval garrison there in 1833. Argentina invaded the islands on 2 April 1982. The British responded with an expeditionary force that landed seven weeks later and after fierce fighting forced Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982.

FALKLAND ISLANDS GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE Location Situated in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands lie between latitude 51 and 53 S and longitude 57 and 62 W about the same latitude south as London lies north. They are 300 miles from the South American mainland. Area The Islands comprise two main Islands (East and West Falkland) and several hundred smaller islands, with a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles (12,173 square km), comparable in area with Northern Ireland but spread over a much greater extent. The distance from Stanley, on the extreme east, to New Island on the extreme west, is some 148 miles. Climate The climate is characterized by a narrow temperature range which varies from 19 C in January to 2 C in July with a mean annual temperature of approximately 6 C. Strong winds are common and the rainfall pattern is comparatively low and evenly distributed throughout the year averaging 24 inches (625 mm). Falkland winters tend not to be as severe as found in some parts of the United Kingdom, but are longer. Snow has been recorded in most months but seldom lies for long. Summers are not quite as hot but the Islands enjoy more hours of sunshine than the south of England.

    Introduction
The Falkland Islands are a group of islands in the south Atlantic. The two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, lie 300 miles [480 km] east of the Argentina coast. About 200 smaller islands form a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles (12,200 square km). The capital and only town is (Port) Stanley. The government of the Falkland Islands administers the British dependent territories of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the Shag and Clerke rocks, lying from 700 to 2,000 miles (1,100 to 3,200 km) to the east and southeast of the Falklands. The total population of the islands in 1991 was estimated at 2100. Argentina has claimed the islands since about 1920. Britain had occupied and administered the islands since 1833 and had consistently rejected Argentina's claims. The Falklands War , chronicled below, started after Argentina invaded and took control of the islands in April 1982. During the war, the British captured about 10,000 Argentine prisoners, all of whom were released afterwards. Argentina sustained 655 men killed, while Britain lost 236. Argentina's ignominious defeat severely discredited the military government and led to the restoration of civilian rule in Argentina in 1983.
