The colony was turned over to Spain two years later and the islands have since been the subject of a territorial dispute, first between Britain and Spain, then between Britain and Argentina. The UK asserted its claim to the islands by establishing a naval garrison there in 1833. Argentina invaded the islands on 2 April 1982. The British responded with an expeditionary force that landed seven weeks later and after fierce fighting forced Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982. Stanley, also Port Stanley, town and capital of the British dependency of the Falkland Islands, located on East Falkland Island. It is the principal community and port of the Falkland Islands and is served by an airport opened in 1979. Of interest here is Christ Church Cathedral, built in the early 1890s. The British made Stanley the capital of the Falklands in 1842. The town was held by Argentine troops for about ten weeks in 1982 and suffered damage before being retaken by a British task force during the Battle of the Falkland Islands. Britain subsequently stationed a substantial military force here. Population (1991 estimate) 1,557. Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001
