THE SOVIET WAR IN AFGHANISTAN:
HISTORY AND HARBINGER OF FUTURE WAR?
by General (Ret) Mohammad Yahya Nawroz , Army of Afghanistan LTC (Ret) Lester W. Grau , U.S. Army Soviet military power meets the Afghan warrior society Fifteen years after its commencement and five years after its cessation, the Soviet-Afghan War remains an enigma in the West. Earlier successful Soviet military interventions in the Ukraine (1945-1951), East Germany (1953), Hungary (1956), and Czechoslovakia (1968) and intermittent Soviet military pressure on Poland demonstrated that the stark military power of the Soviet state was an irresistible tool of Soviet political power. The West was thankful that nuclear deterrence maintained the Cold War balance and reluctantly accepted Soviet intervention within its socialist commonwealth and in the Soviet border regions as one cost of that balance. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a repeat of their invasion of Czechoslovakia. For months after the invasion, hardly a political or military expert in the world doubted that Afghanistan was now forever incorporated as a part of the Soviet Empire and that nothing short of a large-scale global war could alter the status quo. And global war was most unlikely as both super powers intended to avoid it. Some Westerners recalled the British experiences in Afghanistan and waited for a Soviet "Vietnam" to emerge, but most Westerners believed that the Soviets would ultimately prevail. Some even projected their European fears to southern Asia and envisioned a bold Soviet strategic thrust from southern Afghanistan to the shores of the Persian Gulf, to challenge Western strategic interests and disrupt Western access to critical Middle Eastern oil.

The Falkland Islands Conflict 1982 Last updated : 27 Mar. 2003
Visits since 15 Oct. 1997: On the 5th April 1982, a large British task force set out on a 7500 mile journey to liberate a group of tiny windswept islands in the South Atlantic. On 1st May began the biggest naval action to take place since the Second World War - more than 1000 men lost their lives. These pages are not only a resource of information (contributed to by people from all round the world, some of whom were actually involved) but also a tribute to those who served in the forces of both sides during the conflict.

The Falklands War was sudden, short, and bloody. Nearly a thousand British and Argentineans died during the conflict, when the right of the Islanders to British citizenship was defended. The victorious Margaret Thatcher secured her place in Westminster and on the world stage. The defeated Leopoldo Galtieri stepped down, clearing the way for a return to democracy in Argentina. But what of the impact on individual lives? Falkland Families tells the story of war through the experiences of those directly involved alongside their families. It is not only interested in the soldiers who took part in the battles but also their parents, siblings, partners and children.

The Falkland Islands is a group of islands (two main islands and nearly 300 smaller ones) in the South Atlantic. The uninhabited islands were first sighted by Captain John Davis in 1592 and the first recorded landed was made by Captain John Strong in 1690. The Falkland Islands were originally controlled by the Spanish (Islas Malvinas). However, after Argentina gained its independence from Spanish rule, it began to show an interest in the Falkland Islands and in 1820 claimed possession of the territory. In 1882 a British naval squadron occupied the islands and claimed it as a crown colony.
In early November, 1914, the

Islas Malvinas, officially Colony of the Falkland Islands, group of islands (1991 pop. 2,121), 4,618 sq mi (11,961 sq km), S Atlantic, c.300 mi (480 km) E of the Strait of Magellan. The islands are administered as a British crown colony with the capital at Stanley. There are two large islands (East Falkland and West Falkland) and some 200 small ones. From 1908 to 1985 South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands were dependencies of the colony. The Falklands are rather bleak, rocky moorlands, swept by wind and drenched by chill rain. The population is almost entirely British, Christian, and English-speaking. The islands are flourishing sheep-raising centers. The economy is dependent on the export of wool and the sale of Falkland Islands postage stamps and coins. Whales and seals abound in the littoral waters, but the hunting of them has decreased in recent years. There are rich fishing grounds surrounding the islands and the government began selling licenses to foreign commercial fishing operations in 1987. Oil exploration around the islands began in the early 1990s.

To explain the connection between the legal framework and humanitarian action, and to illustrate the implementation of the Geneva Conventions, the author - a jurist and expert in humanitarian law - chose the example of the 1982 armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland-Malvinas Islands in the South Atlantic. This illustrated brochure presents, step by step, how the ICRC humanitarian operation progressed and the provisions of the Geneva Conventions on which it was based. Since the aim of the brochure is to facilitate the study of the Geneva Conventions, it also includes a practical exercise and a questionnaire.

15 years after Falklands war, British grip strong
Argentine general now says 1982 invasion 'hasty'
June 15, 1997
Web posted at: 4:12 p.m. EDT (2012 GMT) STANLEY, Falkland Islands (CNN) Flocks of sheep still graze and penguins still frolic amid the barren, idyllic landscape of the Falkland Islands, just as they did 15 years ago. But a closer look reveals stark evidence that, back then, the eyes of the world were on these tiny specks of land in the South Atlantic, just 800 miles from frigid Antarctica. The skeletal remains of a crashed aircraft; the ruins of an abandoned military field hospital; white crosses marking the graves of soldiers who fell all tell the story of the bitter, pitched military battle played out between two modern nations. Saturday marked the 15th anniversary of Argentina's surrender of the Falkland Islands or the Malvinas, as the Argentines prefer to call them to Great Britain. Two months earlier, an Argentine military force had seized the islands, which had been controlled by the British since 1833 but were also claimed by Argentina. Footage from 1982 Small-frame QuickTime

"CLOUDPUNCHER"
The Story of a Falklands War Gunner
A new book by Tony McNally PTSD CHAT ROOM I did not plan to write "CLOUDPUNCHER" it was more by accident than design. After the Falklands war in 1982 I returned home a completly changed person, even my parents looked at me like I was a complete stranger. I loved being a soldier and was extremely proud of the acheivements of T Air Defence Battery with 14 confirmed kills. I was also lucky to have personally shot down an A4 skyhawk and a Mirage at San Carlos. From San Carlos my Rapier callsign 32a was sent as air defence cover on the ill fated Sir Galahad. I was to be part of one of the worst military disasters in British history. On a bright cloudless 8th of June we arrived at of all places Port Pleasant and weighed anchor. The main reason for the disaster was the fact that senior officers did not get the men ashore quickly enough arguing that you should not mix men and ammunition, rightly so in peace time, however we were at war. This delay enabled an Argentine spotter situated on high ground around Fitzroy to radio back and report two British troop ships anchored in the bay. After what seemed like an eternity we were finally choppered ashore by Sea King and proceeded to get our rapier into action. We had faults with our rapier at San Carlos and were suprised when our callsign was chosen for this task.
