Winston Churchill
The Finest Hour
June 18, 1940
At 5:30 a.m. on May 10, 1940, Germany began a massive attack against Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. Defending those countries were the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) along with the French, Belgian, and Dutch armies.
The Germans had 136 divisions while the Allies had 149. The Allies had more tanks, however the Germans had more combat planes. Although the opposing armies seemed evenly matched, there was a crucial difference in command structures and battle tactics. The Germans had an aggressive battle plan and utilized modern communications such as radio. German tank generals including Heinz Guderian and Erwin Rommel commanded from the front lines, improvising when necessary, and urging their troops onward. Morale was very high.
The Allies assumed a defensive, World War I style battle plan centered around the Maginot Line, a string of defensive forts along the French-German border, south of the Ardennes forest, stretching from Luxembourg to Switzerland. Allied generals were usually nowhere near the front and even relied on hand-delivered messages. The high speed mechanized German 'blitzkrieg' continually caught the Allied armies off-guard. In many cases, Allied generals ordered troops to defend areas which had already been overtaken by the Germans.

Have you ever wondered who Glenn Gould’s first piano teacher was, which prime minister regularly fell through the ice on the way to visit his sweetheart, or in which part of Canada Susanna Moodie set her famous novel Roughing It in the Bush ? You are not alone. The search for biographical information about Canadians can lead one on many serendipitous journeys through the wealth of information available on the World Wide Web. The information currently available is scattered, volatile and incomplete. Memorable Canadians: An Index of Biographies Contained on the National Library of Canada’s Web Site addresses these concerns. In May 1999, I was given the challenge of organizing the biographical information on the National Library of Canada’s Web site. While the goal of this project was to create a finding aid to the National Library’s existing material, there was also a need to know what other biographical sources could be made available to National Library (NL) clients seeking information about Canada’s people. The project involved researching Canadian and international information, investigating NL material, and creating a Web "sub" site. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines "biography" as the following:

    • Paul-Emile Borduas Born 1905 in Quebec and died 1960. Today, Borduas is recognized as the greatest Canadian abstract painter of the post-war era. His splashy, surrealist style was radical for the times. In 1953, Borduas left Canada for the United States, and in 1955, he went to Paris.
    • Jack Bush Born 1909 in Toronto, raised in Montreal, and then, in his late teens, returned to Toronto. Initially, his paintings were representational, but by the 1940s his work was becoming increasingly abstract and eventually turned to color abstraction.
    • Frank Carmichael Born 1890 in Orillia, died 1945, and was the youngest member of the original Group of Seven.
