Had history taken a different turn, the United States easily could have been a part of the great Spanish or French overseas empires. Its present inhabitants might speak Spanish and form one nation with Mexico, or speak French and be joined with Canadian Francophone Quebec and Montreal.
Yet the earliest explorers of America were not English, Spanish, or French. The first European record of exploration in America is in a Scandinavian language. The Old Norse Vinland Saga recounts how the adventurous Leif Eriksson and a band of wandering Norsemen settled briefly somewhere on the northeast coast of America probably Nova Scotia, in Canada in the first decade of the 11th century, almost 400 years before the next recorded European discovery of the New World.
The first known and sustained contact between the Americas and the rest of the world, however, began with the famous voyage of an Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, funded by the Spanish rulers Ferdinand and Isabella. Columbus's journal in his "Epistola," printed in 1493, recounts the trip's drama the terror of the men, who feared monsters and thought they might fall off the edge of the world; the near-mutiny; how Columbus faked the ships' logs so the men would not know how much farther they had travelled than anyone had gone before; and the first sighting of land as they neared America.

The world's worst natural disasters
When man meets nature in force, nature wins By: David McCormick , January 13, 2000
For all our technology, humanity has yet to conquer the most powerful force on Earth - nature. Extreme weather and natural disasters continue to strike with little warning, wreaking havoc on the lives of millions around the globe. Here are some the most notable and deadly natural disasters humankind has ever seen.
Swirling and spiraling - the worst cyclones and hurricanes... Flooding in Bangladesh has killed more people than any other natural disaster One of the poorest and most densely populated nations in the world, Bangladesh is periodically pounded by vicious cyclones that sweep up the Bay of Bengal, unleashing terrible flooding and resulting in tremendous loss of life. In 1970, a cyclone and the resulting floods killed 500,000 people, making it the worst natural disaster of the 20th Century. Packing winds of up to 230 km/h, the cyclone slammed into the heavily populated coastal area, where several river deltas provide fertile land. The strong winds produce massive waves, which deluged entire villages. Millions of people were left homeless. "The Great Hurricane" that hit the Caribbean in October 1780 is the most deadly Western Hemisphere hurricane on record. It killed 22,000 people on the islands of Martinique, St. Eustatius, and Barbados.

Professor John McClymer Description : This course will explore the experiences of women in the United States from the Revolutionary Era to the present using the "Call" of the 1850 Worcester Convention as its basic organizing device. We will, that is, take its definition of "the general question of Woman's Rights and Relations" as our own. We will pay special attention to several key episodes: the first women's rights conventions, which provided the impetus for the first wave of American feminism; the Shirtwaist Strike of 1909-10 ("The Uprising of the Twenty Thousand") and the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. Fire of 1911, which together marked the emergence of the working woman; the 1920s, which witnessed the emergence of the "Flapper"; the 1940s during which women first entered a myriad of new occupations and then were coaxed/coerced into a new "domesticity"; and the present. At left is the famous WWII Poster of "Rosie the Riveter" from
