The Hall of American Maritime Enterprise portrays three centuries of ocean and river commerce with photographs, objects, films, and models of sailing ships and steamships. The exhibits also include dioramas and period settings representing the whaling industry, a colonial warehouse, a ship's engine room from 1930, and a modern river towboat pilothouse. The United States, like many countries, grew up around seaports. Even today, all but four of the nation's 20 largest cities have major harbors. Lining the walls of the first gallery in this hall are images of harbors and models of the types of ships that have kept harbors alive for centuries, from pilot schooners to steam tugs. The next gallery features the oldest commercial marine propeller known to have survived. It pushed and ultimately sank the ship Indiana when in 1858 one of its blades broke off, punctured the hull, and sent the vessel to the bottom of Lake Superior. Some 7 tons of the Indiana 's remains were recovered by the Smithsonian in 1979. The oldest commercial marine propeller known to have survived, from the

Why, because we are amazed at the damage that nature can wreak and we are powerless to stop it. We are also amazed at the destruction we can bring upon ourselves. We sympathize with the victims and give thanks that it didn't happened to us. Our hearts are warmed by the stories of people helping one another, and by the stories of heroism. Did you have a coach for a high school history teacher that knew no more about history than what was in the text book? And he couldn't answer any questions if the answer wasn't in the back of the teacher's edition of the text book? If all the history you know is what's in the high school text books, you've been left with a distorted view of alot of events in our country's history. You've probably also missed out on alot of history too. I like to look at history from "cause and affect" point of view. I know that sounds like the boring part of history, but that's how you really learn from history. Try studying the events that lead up to a certain event then look at the changes (good and bad) that came about because of that event. I like biographies too (though not as much). Most of the time we see great men in history as extraordinary men whose accomplishments are beyond the reach of us common men. Read their biographies, you'll come away with a different point of view. The internet has a wealth of resources for the history buff, covering subjects that you will not find in the text books. I've tried to put together a list of links covering various subjects in different periods in U.S. history. If you know of a good link that I have missed let me know. jpkilpat@hiwaay.net

Clara Barton Her Life and Fight for Humanity and the American Red Cross The youngest of five children in a middle-class family, Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. Although she was educated at home, Clara began teaching school herself at the age of fifteen in various elementary schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey between the years 1836 and 1854. Prior to the Civil War, Clara's most noteworthy achievement was the establishment of a free public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. Additionally, her only medical experience prior to the war was when she cared for her invalid brother David for two years.

The Top Three Zombie Outbreaks in U.S. History
Like vampires, zombies are great opportunists. So it comes as no surprise that zombie outbreaks often happen in the wake of natural disasters. Combine disasters with warm climates and you truly have a recipe for a major outbreak, as the following stories prove. Key West, Florida, 1935
Key West, 1935: Zombie
bodies prepared for disposal
On Labor Day, September 2, 1935, a major hurricane bore down on the Florida Keys, a string of islands separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane, one of only two Category 5 storms ever recorded in the United States, made landfall at Key West, the most populous of the keys. As day turned to night, heavy rains and winds of over 150 miles an hour rolled over the island, destroying virtually everything standing. Amid the destruction, infected rats began roaming the island, and by morning, the first of the zombies appeared. Many islanders mistook the zombies for dazed hurricane survivors and the plague spread across the island like wildfire. To make matters worse, the roads and bridges connecting the keys to the mainland had been washed out by the storm. The islanders had no way to escape. Scores of people drowned when they chose to leap into the choppy surf rather than face the voracious zombies. Within days, FVZA troops from all over the south converged on Key West in a variety of sea craft. They established a beachhead on the south side of the island and went about the process of extermination. It took three weeks to secure the island. A total of 3500 people were infected and destroyed, an enormous number considering that there was a zombie vaccine available at this time.
