The IRS Code (Section 105) allows employers to deduct from their taxable income amounts paid for the medical expenses of their employees. As an employee benefit, these employer paid medical expenses are not considered taxable income to the employee. These features may encourage businesses to employ an owner’s spouse to save taxes. There are several advantages to a self-employed farmer or other business to write off the entire medical insurance and out-of-pocket medical expenses on Schedule F or C as an employee fringe benefit. First, the employer can deduct the full expense rather than only 60% of the health insurance when using the self-employed health insurance deduction on page 1 of the 1040. Second, if these expenses would be taken as itemized deductions, they would be subject to the 7.5% of income limitation that is imposed on medical expenses. Third, deducting these expenses on Schedule F or C decreases self-employment tax. Further, medical expenses paid by the employer are tax free to the employee. Of course, if you are deducting the medical expenses for your spouse/employee, you will want to specify that it is coverage for his/her entire family. Therefore, you, as the employer, are covered under your spouse’s medical plan.

Employee Management for Production Agriculture Conference
    August 15, 2001 (Chicago)
The Employee Management for Production Agriculture Conference concluded August 3 to rave reviews. 160 participants from eighteen different states and a variety of production backgrounds attended. Participants from different sides of the country and with very different types of businesses were able to share and learn with each other. Notes conference organizer Sarah L. Fogelman, an extension agricultural economist at Kansas State University, "Judging from the attendance from over the last two years and the amazing feedback we have received from conference participants, it is safe to say that this conference is addressing a need that is universal and growing." Of the 70 conference evaluations received, 61 attendees wanted to see this conference repeated and 66 thought the value (quality and quantity of information) received outweighed total costs of time, travel, lodging, and fees. The conference website includes proceedings, information about speakers, and other useful information.

Your action plan for a smooth transition
Only 10 percent of family businesses survive into the third generation, and more than 50 percent fail in the second generation. To improve your odds of successfully continuing the family business, find a trusted business consultant who also understands family dynamics and personal issues among family members. The key, according to Norm Coe, business consultant with First Pioneer Farm Credit, is to get help from a trusted business consultant. "Families transfer their businesses to their children only once in their lifetimes," says Coe. "So, of course, they need help to move through the process and to sidestep potential pitfalls." On your own, the process can be overwhelming. Your business is unique because it is shaped by your family dynamics. And combining the emotional dynamics of family relationships with the demands of a business often creates very difficult challenges. Bob Pingrey with two of his sons, Dan, in striped shirt, and Don. Their transition plans are moving along nicely because of excellent communications between generations and their profitable businesses. Get help from a business consultant Many business owners think first of the legal, tax and financial aspects of transferring the business. While these issues are important, addressing the family dynamics and personal issues among the family members in the business should come first.

    Avoiding common management mistakes
Improving communication can turn employee problems around

If you think you are doing a lot right as an employer, but you just can’t seem to keep your employees happy, look to see if you’re making one or more common communication mistakes. Correcting them just might turn your employee problems around. Research tells us that 95 percent of the time lack of communication is the top reason why businesses have high employee turnover or other employee problems, such as low productivity. That’s 95 percent of the time!
As in all facets of life, effective communication in business — including agricultural businesses — is a key ingredient of success. Good communication can help you relate to your employees, integrate them as members of a cohesive team and help you effectively define job responsibilities. In short, it can help you build a productive work environment, where good employees are more likely to stay long term.
This article offers helpful tips to get employers and employees talking regularly and effectively. We think that if you try these ideas, you’ll find that nothing is as effective as face-to-face communication.
