Introductory computer instruction prepares students to use computerized accounting programs and financial records to build a base of information that will be analyzed in subsequent courses. The importance of determining cost of production factors is stressed, along with understanding financial ratios to better analyze the health of the business.

In the human resources section, participants demonstrate their commitment to including workers in farm management decisions, providing a safe and fair work environment, and overall quality of life issues that are so vital to a sustainable farm system. SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
The Youngquists have always sought to provide "the children of [their] workers with the best start possible." To do this, they set out to create a top-notch Preschool/Daycare facility for the children of their farm employees, as well as other children in the community. The Youngquists wrote grants, took out loans and found the building to make this dream a reality. Their hard work has paid off with a successful, self-sustaining, year round day-care facility for infants through 11-year-old children. Not only is this day-care facility a significant asset to the workers, it also represents an important community service to the town of Mt. Vernon as a whole. Through the years the Berry Good School has become financially very solid, allowing the Youngquists the opportunity to improve the educational components and facilities. They have completed a learning center with six computers with Internet capabilities and top-of-the-line bilingual software. They have also hired a curriculum coordinator and two others who work with the children on computer learning.

Denied a contract for 5 years, workers walk out
Jenny Brown
October 1999
Winning a union election is frequently the end of a long battle. But for many workers it's also just the first step to getting a voice on the job. Workers at Beverly Farm, a home for developmentally disabled in Godfrey, Illinois, voted in their union in 1994. Since then they have had to wage a five year struggle just to get a first contract. In July, having exhausted other possibilities for winning a fair contract, the workers voted to strike. I talked to Beverly Farm workers on the picket line in August. I was in Illinois as one of five interns who helped out with the strike for a few weeks, as part the AFL-CIO's Union Summer program. We left knowing a lot more about the struggle to get democracy on the job, and the dedication people are willing to put in to see it through. The average pay at Beverly Farm is $5.85/hour, the lowest of any similar facility in Illinois. Because of this, the facility experiences very high turnover. "We need to be paid enough so that we can afford to keep working at Beverly Farm," said Sarah Bramlet, a striker. "It's difficult to provide a high standard of care when most of the employees are short-timers or temporaries." Those who stay are not rewarded. I talked to staff who worked there for 14 years were still making just over $6. Beverly Farm, a private nonprofit, gets 80% of its funds from the State of Illinois. In turn they provide residential care and developmental training for 400 adults. Recently, a lot of that money has been going into legal fees trying to keep the union out.

That includes managing a work force that may include everyone from family members to hired employees, usually including Latino workers who today comprise the vast majority of field workers. "Ag Help Wanted" is a unique new book designed to help farmers, ranchers and others in agricultural production understand and address the complexities and regulatory requirements of managing a work force. The book's introduction describes it as "a guide for owners and managers at every level of agricultural and horticultural operation in the western United States." The 242-page illustrated, full-color book presents principles, practical examples, legal considerations and tools to help producers manage the labor component of their businesses. A Web site, AgHelpWanted.org, provides supplementary information and tools, as well as continually updated links to help the user stay abreast of legal and regulatory changes.

Singling out singles: Structuring employee services
to accommodate the dating game by Michael P. Scott

Corporate America's effort to help workers juggle a job and family has left some single employees feeling overworked and unappreciated. Savvy companies seeking to establish themselves as Employers of Choice are paying closer attention to the needs of singles in the workplace. "When it comes to employee services, it is important to offer something for everyone," says David Dale, CESM, manager, employee services, Ashland Inc., Lexington, KY. "Therefore, one of our objectives in seeking top talent is to position ourselves as being single friendly." My life is my job
In my role as an organizational consultant and speaker, I have heard many stories of singles' needs being ignored and how they often feel taken advantage of at work because of their marital status. The laments of being asked to work extra hours, while married employees are given the flexibility to leave work early if need be, are common. "When most of an employee's waking hours are spent at work, it becomes difficult to meet people socially," says Helen Patton, supervisor II activities, State Farm Insurance Co., Bloomington, IL. "Therefore, many single employees at our company have expressed a desire to meet new people at work and through work." The challenge for employee services providers is to effectively integrate the needs of singles into employee events and programs.

Research Brief Sharemilking in Wisconsin: evaluating a farm entry/exit strategy
A long-standing New Zealand arrangement that helps beginning farmers build equity and management skills while allowing retiring farmers to ease out of farming offers promise for the Wisconsin dairy industry. Sharemilking has been part of the New Zealand dairy farmer career path since the 1880s, playing a critical role for the industry as a whole. It has survived because it has been able to change with the New Zealand dairy industry. A tool to help both beginning and retiring farmers is needed for the Wisconsin dairy industry because fewer young people than ever before are starting their own farms. And older farmers are finding few retirement options. Steve Stevenson, associate director of the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems (CIAS), and Russell O’Harrow, retired Oconto County dairy farmer, traveled to New Zealand in 1995 to find out more about the New Zealand dairy industry. CIAS Research Briefs and summarize some of their observations. This brief takes a closer look at sharemilking and its current pressures in New Zealand and presents some recent findings on how well it may transfer to Wisconsin.

Orientation and Training of Employees
HRM-3-97
Mark Mechling Do you remember your first day on a job? Were you confident about this new work experience, or were you anxious, perhaps even apprehensive? Most people starting a new job would admit to being nervous, and perhaps concerned about performing up to their employer's expectations and being accepted by other employees. Often farm employers neglect to adequately orient and train new employees. They assume the new employees understand what needs to be done or will "catch on" quickly. A thorough orientation and training program takes time and effort, but will increase worker productivity, decrease confusion, and provide satisfaction for both employer and employee.
Orientation
Two questions need to be answered in regards to the orientation of a new employee:
  • Who will orientate the new employee?
  • What should be covered during orientation? One person should be in charge of handling orientation. Generally, this will be the owner/operator; however, on large farm operations, another employee may specifically be responsible for orientating all new employees. Having just one individual in charge of orientation ensures a consistent message to new employees. The orientation of a new employee can involve several people even though one person has overall responsibility. Information covered will change from farm to farm, but a basic core of material should be discussed with the new employee, including such specific characteristics of the farm as layout of operation, other employees, history, mission, goals, and role of the employee. This kind of information provides the "big picture" of the farm to the employee. Personnel policies including probationary period, disciplinary actions, work schedule, safety rules, and use of equipment also need to be covered.
