Culture and tradition
Many people in the Faroes have tried to defend the "grind" by pointing to its 'historic' place in Faroese society and culture. In the past, the slaughter of pilot whales supplied the dietary and nutritional needs of local communities. This is not the case today. The Faroes of today are home to a modern Scandinavian society, with a position in the modern global economy that supports a standard of living equal to many of its wealthy Scandinavian neighbours.
Faroese communities are no longer engaged in peasant-based production to meet their nutritional needs. In fact, the Faroese of today are far more dependent on their local supermarket than they are on the (polluted) meat of the pilot whale.

Culture The Faroes do not have a huge cultural heritage. Faroese was long regarded as a peasant language and the written form was not standardised until the 1890s. Life was hard, and after the chores were done there was not a lot of time left to write novels or paint portraits. The earliest Faroese music would be considered bland by modern standards, and it was designed to accompany the Faroese chain dance and the kvæði, a body of late medieval ballads. There were no instruments on the islands, and simple and repetitive melodies were commonly sung in a minor key. Today, traditional dancing takes place mostly on special or festive occasions to help assert the islanders' unique identity. The chain dance was once popular all over Scandinavia, but has survived intact only in the Faroes. During the long and cold winter nights, people occupied themselves by reciting stories and poetry that had been passed down orally for generations. They were finally collected and written down in the 19th century. The first modern Faroese poet, Nólsoyar-Poul Poulson, wrote politically inspired ballads dealing with corruption and the troubled economics of the early 1800s. The best known writer in the short history of Faroese literature is Heðin Brú, whose books are very popular in the islands and have gained acceptance abroad as well. Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen and William Heinesen are other well-known Faroese authors who wrote in Danish rather than their native language.

Facts about the Faroes
Location and size
Situated in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic at 62°00'N, the Faroe Islands lie northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway. he archipelago is composed of 18 islands covering 1399 km2 (545.3 sq.miles) and is 113 km (70 miles) long and 75 km (47 miles) wide, roughly in the shape of an arrowhead. There are 1100 km (687 miles) of coastline and at no time is one more than 5 km (3 miles) away from the ocean. The highest mountain is 882 m (2883 ft) above sea level and the average height above sea level for the country is 300 m (982 ft).
Climate
The weather is maritime and quite changeable, from moments of brilliant sunshine to misty hill fog, to showers. The Gulf Stream encircling the islands tempers the climate. The harbours never freeze and the temperature in winter time is very moderate considering the high latitude. Snowfall occurs, but is shortlived. The average temperature ranges from 3°C in winter to 11°C in the summer. In sheltered areas, the temperature can be much higher, but the air is always fresh and clean no matter what the season.
Population
The population is 48.339 (28th February 2001). The capital of Tórshavn has a population of 17.830. Klaksvík, the second largest town in the Faroes, has a population of 5,000.

As a stepping-stone on the viking trail from Scandinavia to North America or just as a welcome "pied ý terre" to those crossing the great ocean, the Faroe Islands is the green home for birds, sheep and people. And there, in the very centre of the islands, is Tórshavn. Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands
Since the early days of viking settlement more than one thousand years ago, the Faroese have met and held their parliament or "Thing" in Tórshavn. Tórshavn is said to be perhaps the smallest capital in the world (approx. 15,000 inhabitants), and as an administrative and political centre it may even be the oldest in Scandinavia. The old site of the Thing is on the headland in the middle of the harbour of Tórshavn. Today, the Faroese Government offices are in the old listed buildings on the very point of the promotory, while the Parliament is in an old wooden building in the centre of the town. Tórshavn is a modern town which, owing to modern communication and infrastructure, is not at all as isolated as it used to be during the past centuries. But it retains its unique character, fascinating, small and different from any other capital in the world.

Faroese History
It is a very disputed question who the people were that first settled the Faroe Islands and when they did so. Studies made by natural scientists and tales of travels by seafaring Irish friars have led scholars to believe that the Faroe Islands were populated by middle of the 7th century AD. There is no agreement on this matter, however, and the belief is not supported by archaeological findings. On the other hand, the Norwegian colonization during the Viking Age is well documented. Throughout the Viking Age (approx. 800-1050 AD), large-scale emigration from Norway led to the establishment of Norse agricultural societies, partly in areas populated by Celtic peoples bordering the Irish Sea and on the islands off Scotland's western and northern coasts, and partly in uninhabited areas in the North Atlantic. Contact between the areas of Norse settlement was strong and one of its results was to introduce a number of Celtic cultural elements into the otherwise purely Norse Faroese culture. The Norse Vikings in the Faroe Islands built scattered farms of Norwegian design around the country. From these, people farmed the land, reared cattle and sheep, hunted birds, caught fish and gathered food. To a large extent they did so on a subsistence basis, but Faroese farms have never been entirely self-sufficient. Important goods like timber, iron and other metals, limestone and tools, as well as luxuries, had to be imported. Thus goods were produced for export in return, such as wool, wadmal, tallow, fish oil, stockfish and feathers and down.

BUK’s stay in Tórshavn was short, and unfortunately there was no time to visit any other institutions in the Faroe Islands on that occasion. But the Nordic guests still could get some idea of the surroundings both while sailing on board the schooner "Nordlyset", and on an outing to the historical Kirkjubøur.

In Kirkjubøur, in addition to the churches, stands the farm house, "Kongsgården", whose black tarred blockhouses date back from the Middle Ages. For 16 generations the estate has been in the possession of the family Paturssons. At the present moment it is inhabited by Sølvá og Páll Patursson, who generously treated the Nordic guests to coffee and pancakes at the long table in the old meeting room.
The room, which formerly used to serve as a meeting place for the episcopal residence, is used today on special official occasions; in the summer time it is also open for tourists.

Egita Dardeta, November 2002 "The Nordic Islands" , organized by The Nordic Council of Ministers Information Office in Riga. The culture days will take place November 1-22, 2002 . The aim of these days is to introduce the far and unknown Nordic regions, their culture and art to the Latvian society.
The following events will take place within "The Nordic Islands":
Art exhibition from Greenland "New beginnings"
A word "art" was not originally found in the inuit language. Only after the first contacts with the Europeans a word "eqqumiitsuliaq" was invented, which means "something interesting that has been created". The things created were mostly articles to be used in everyday life: fishing and hunting equipment, clothes. 12 artists from Greenland are represented in the exhibition: Naja Abelsen, Oline Binzer, Kristian Fly, Miki Jacobsen, Lisa Lynge Hessedahl, Helene Jørgensen, Marianne Jessen, Else Lennert, Nina Motzfeldt, Lars Møller, Butti Pedersen, Christian Rosing, Linda Riber Sørensen.

Language History of the Faroes by Michael Paul Reveal The early Viking history of the Faroe Islands is recorded in a vast compendium of Viking sagas transcribed in Iceland during the Middle Ages. It is perhaps more a mixture of legend, myth and historical fact than a true historical document.
Nevertheless, the famous opening line of the Faroese Saga declares quite simply: "There was a man, Grím Kamban, who first settled in the Faroes." Most historians now believe Grím Kamban arrived in the Faroes to settle on Eysturoy around 825 AD. The name, Grím Kamban, however, is considered Celtic in origin, not Norse. Some historians believe that the early Viking settler, Grím Kamban, did not arrive in the Faroes directly from Norway, but came via the Hebrides or Ireland. Others feel he must have come from the Isle of Man, which by the mid-ninth century supported a rather wealthy and well-settled Norse-Celtic community. By this time Viking warrior-settlers had ventured from Western Norway to Normandy and the British Isles, on to the Faroes and Iceland, and later further on to Greenland, and some would claim, to America some 500 years before Columbus sailed westward into the unknown. The Viking culture that was spread throughout the North Atlantic region in those days was fairly uniform and the linguistic differences were small. Over the decades, however, the distant lands became more and more isolated and Old Norse began to split up into more and more dialects and, in the case of some areas, to die out altogether. Folks in Iceland claim Icelandic is the closest to Old Norse, but Faroe Islanders claim an equally close connection.

The Nordic House in the Faroe Islands
- Fifteen Years of Nordic Cultural Diversity by Peter Turtschaninoff,
Managing Director
As Managing Director of the Nordic House, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the Faroe Islands and to the Nordic House.
The Nordic House, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, is a symbol of the partnership between the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Government of the Faroe Islands. The Nordic House is designed to foster Nordic culture in the Faroes, as well as encourage and stimulate the development of Faroese arts and culture not only within the Faroes, but also its dissemination throughout the Nordic region. The unique and distinctive architecture of the Nordic House reflects its multi-faceted mission. Sitting atop Elf Hill, overlooking the capital city of Tórshavn, this architectural jewel was designed by the visionary Norwegian professor and architect, Ola Steen and Icelander Kolbrún Ragnarsdóttir.
With its traditional Faroese grass-roof, its design blends the best of the Nordic region: timber from Sweden, glass and tile from Norway, and construction materials from Denmark and Iceland.
