Anfinn Kallsberg, Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, "Elusive Oil"
Oil industry developments figured prominently in the traditional, annual Ólavsøka address given by the Faroese Prime Minister on 29 July. Initial test wells have established the fact that, "a working petroleum system" on the Faroe Shelf exists, however, finding oil and gas in exploitable quantities is still an elusive goal. Remarks made by Anfinn Kallsberg reflect Faroese concerns and expectations in this environment of uncertainty. Below are excerpts:
Oil Developments
There is much to say on the subject of oil at this year's Ólavsøka…A tremendous amount of detailed preparatory work has been accomplished over the last several years. Legislation is drafted that establishes the necessary framework for the industry, the oil administration is in place, environmental studies are completed, and the emergency response infrastructure is organised. Oil industry activities are now commencing with the assurance that all the necessary steps have been taken to ensure that oil exploration goes forward in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Now we wait excitedly for the first results, which as anticipated will take a few weeks.

The Faroes do not have a huge cultural heritage. Faroese was long regarded as a peasant language and the written form was not standardised until the 1890s. Life was hard, and after the chores were done there was not a lot of time left to write novels or paint portraits. The earliest Faroese music would be considered bland by modern standards, and it was designed to accompany the Faroese chain dance and the , a body of late medieval ballads. There were no instruments on the islands, and simple and repetitive melodies were commonly sung in a minor key. Today, traditional dancing takes place mostly on special or festive occasions to help assert the islanders' unique identity. The chain dance was once popular all over Scandinavia, but has survived intact only in the Faroes. Faroese is a Germanic language derived from Old Norse, significantly influenced by Gaelic, and related closely to Icelandic and some Norwegian dialects. Thor was traditionally the main god in the Faroes. He was rowdy and slow moving as gods go, a champ of the common people, and he held the controls for thunder, wind, storms and natural disasters. He could also fend off malevolent outsiders. Two other important gods were the twins Freyr and Freyja, who served as god and goddess of fertility and sexuality. The islands today have officially shrugged off the Norse pantheon and belong to the Protestant Lutheran Church. If you're interested in traditional Faroese food, you can probably forget about fresh green vegetables and start getting used to meat and potatoes. Meat is the basis of every meal, and one of the most popular treats is

In summer with its endless daylight, darkness is but at fleeting matter. The ever-changing light arouses the desire to stay awake, contemplate life and listen to nature's efforts to go to sleep. The Faroe Islands are one of the last places in Europe where everyday life brings what people elsewhere look for: closeness, nature and peace. The geographical location and size of our islands have contributed to the preservation of our own culture and language. Today we consider our modest size a benefit in as much as we have a choice how close we want to be to the outside world and vice versa. God is the sound director The musicians are getting ready inside the grotto, and this time the clarinettist is elevating the moment. The music and whispering of the sea enhance the feeling of something greater than Man.
    Man is a minority here.

Contact Us © IGA FAROE ISLANDS LOCATION AND COMMUNICATION LINKS The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic 430 km south-east of Iceland, 600 km west of Norway and a good 300 km north of Scotland. The Faroe Islands are in the same time zone as Britain. The distance to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with which the Faroe Islands have constitutional links, is about 1,300 km. The islands are of volcanic origin and part of the North Atlantic basalt region stretching from Ireland to Greenland. The Ice Age glaciers formed an archipelago of mountains, deep valleys, narrow fords and straits. The basalt covers older geological strata which may contain oil and gas. The climate is typical oceanic: humid, changeable and windy. In Tórshavn the temperature in the coldest month averages 3°C and in the warmest 11°C. The shortest day is 5 hours and the longest 19’/2 hours. There are no woods, but plenty of grass. A mere 6% of the land is under cultivation while the rest is reserved for the grazing of 70,000 sheep and some cattle and horses. Birds are plentiful, especially sea-birds, but other animal life is sparse. The sea around the Faroe Islands is influenced by the meeting of the warm Gulf Stream and cold northern currents, rich in nutritional matter. This guarantees rather stable ocean temperatures, between 5° and 10°C, favouring fish and animal life. The geography and topography of the Faroe Islands make transport and communication difficult.

    1000 kilometres of adventures
    The Faroe Islands inside out
In a way it is a very European film, and it is just the European character, Katrin Ottarsdóttir thinks is important to hold on to:
Katrin Ottarsdóttir could very well consider making more films in Faroes. She finds it important to present the Faroese culture to as many as possible, but at the same time she doubts if she will be allowed to. It has turned out to be difficult to get the film distributed to the cinemas [in Denmark]. Many fear that a film in Faroese will get a limited audience. That is an argument she does not understand.
    Half hearted support
For me it is also a strange culture-political decision, when you choose to fully finance a film via a consultant arrangement at the Danish Film Institute, without following it up by making sure the film reaches the Danish public. Or as Katrin Ottarsdóttir puts it:
