The Faroe Islands
Introduction to the Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but lie fewer than 200 miles off the NW coast of Scotland. Each year, the Islanders brutally slaughter up to 3,000 pilot whales and other small whales, dolphins and porpoises.
The Drive
Once the whales have been spotted out at sea, the Faroese use their motorboats to round up and drive the confused and terrified group of pilot whales to the shore. When the whales reach the shallows, 5lb metal hooks (gaffs) are driven into their bodies.
Culture and tradition
Many people in the Faroes have tried to defend the "grind" by pointing to its 'historic' place in Faroese society and culture. In the past, the slaughter of pilot whales supplied the dietary and nutritional needs of local communities. This is not the case today.

Nomadic hunters followed the lichen and moss-eating reindeer into post-glacial Denmark. The reindeer heard 'go north' voices, but Stone Age Danes stayed put, sowing seeds in the ash of slash-and-burn fields, fencing in stock animals and burying their dead vertically. Skill and artistry flowered in the Bronze Age from 1800 BC, trades routes paddled all the way south and the most beautiful made-by-Danes products were buried in bogs for sacrificial safe-keeping. Iron clanged in from 500 BC and was domestically available, leading to the development of large agricultural communities. Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, (Danish mums had a few problems naming their children), who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.

Faroe Islands - YUGOSLAVIA 0-6

June 07, 2001
Mateja Kezman (Yugoslavia)
Toftir, FAROE ISLANDS, June 6 (Reuters)
- Yugoslavia beat the Faroe Islands 6-0 in a World Cup group one qualifier on Wednesday with striker Mateja Kezman grabbing a hat-trick. The win greatly improves Yugoslavia's goal difference as they chase second-placed Slovenia, who beat Switzerland 1-0 in Basel earlier on Wednesday. Russia beat the basement team, Luxembourg, to extend their lead at the top to four points from Slovenia who have 13, the Swiss on 11 and Yugoslavia on nine. The Yugoslavs still have a game in hand of the teams they are chasing. The North Atlantic Faroe Islands, who fielded only three professionals, suffered one of their worst defeats at the hands of the Yugoslavs and stay second from bottom on four points. Yugoslavia's Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic opened the scoring after only 20 minutes, putting a header past Faroese goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen from a corner by Sinesa Mihajlovic. PSV Eindhoven striker Kezman, the top scorer in the Dutch league, scored his first goal just before the half-hour mark to put the Yugoslavs 2-0 ahead by the break.

YUGOSLAVIA - Faroe Islands 2-0

August 16, 2001
Belgrade, YUGOSLAVIA, August 15 - Yugoslav national team secured its chances to qulaify for the 2002 World Cup finals with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Faroe Islands. The result leaves Yugoslavia with 12 points from 7 matches. Home team suffered a blow before the game when Lazio star Dejan Stankovic was ruled out after reporting to the stadium with a fever. Yugoslavia played with three attackers, but though Savo Milosevic, Predrag Mijatovic and Mateja Kezman all looked dangerous, they couldn't break down the stern Faroes' defence. Sinisa Mihajlovic opened the scoring on 25 minutes with his trademark free-kick after Mijatovic was fouled. Yugoslavia had to wait until the 86th minute for the clincher. Mihajlovic again played a part, with his corner headed home by Miroslav Djukic. 2002 World Cup qualifier, Group One, Belgrade, YUGOSLAVIA, August 15 YUGOSLAVIA FAROE ISLANDS Scorers: Sinisa Mihajlovic (23) and Miroslav Djukic (86).
