In examining the vital relationship that exists between technical application and innovation, the course offers students a unique opportunity to explore creative approaches to technical problem solving. During the first year students are introduced to the notion of menswear, womenswear or surface textiles for fashion within a technical, creative, industrial and historical context. Initially the main focus is on developing students' awareness of fundamental elements of the design through to production processes. Students studying in menswear or womenswear examine the processes involved in producing both sportswear (unstructured garments) and tailoring (structured garments). In surface textiles for fashion, students explore the relationship between fashion and surface textiles, from 2 dimensions to 3. Through the technological processes studied, students are given the confidence to evaluate and analyse their design ideas. Within the visual research core, students develop their understanding of the design process through research, design development and presentation skills.
