ACTION: Notice of meeting. - SUMMARY: This notice sets forth the schedule and proposed agenda of a forthcoming meeting of the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century (Commission). This notice also describes the functions of the Commission. Notice of this meeting is required under Section 10(a)(2) of the Federal Advisory Committee Act and is intended to notify the general public of their opportunity to attend. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century was established by the Secretary of Education and is governed by the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) (P.L. 92-463, as amended; 5 U.S.C.A. Appendix 2). The Commission was established to address the pressing need to significantly raise student achievement in mathematics and science by focusing on the quality of mathematics and science instruction in K-12 classrooms nationwide. The Commission will develop a set of recommendations with a corresponding, multifaceted action strategy to improve the quality of teaching in mathematics and science. The meeting of the Commission is open to the public. The proposed agenda will focus on (1) What is known about effective teaching that leads to high levels of mathematical and scientific understanding among all students, and (2) What it takes to enable teachers to teach in this way. The proposed agenda will include both plenary sessions and presentations. Space may be limited and you are encouraged to register if you plan to attend.
