A Fancy For Felines The Homing Instinct Resources A FANCY FOR FELINES Exotic breeds are popular at cat shows. Whether you like your cats striped or spotted, sleek or fuzzy, there is a breed for you. Indeed, cat breeding has become a multi-billion dollar business around the world, with breeders constantly competing to create exotic new varieties that might win the blue ribbon at the next pet show. Often, cat breeders will carefully comb wild and domestic breeds looking for just the right combination of characteristics, matching long hair from one breed, for example, with racy stripes from another. But other times, chance plays as big a role as design in the development of a popular breed.
The remarkable curve-eared American Curl, for instance, got its start with a stray cat discovered in California in 1981. "On a sunny day in June, a longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga," explains one Web site devoted to the cats with the gracefully-arced ears. "Joe [asked] Grace not to feed the kitten. Grace, not abiding by her husband's wishes but listening to her heart instead, left a bowl of food on the porch. The affectionate black kitten quickly worked her way into the Rugas' hearts (especially Joe's) and they named her Shulamith, which means 'black but comely.' Such are the beginnings of the American Curl as it is known today."

To most people, Bart the cat may look like just another tabby. But to high school student Jose Ybara and his mother, the mischievous Illinois feline is a hero.
One night a few years ago, just before the break of dawn, Jose lay in his bed suffering from a sudden, life-threatening seizure. Bart, apparently alarmed by Jose's distress, leapt upon the mother's bed in the next room. "She was licking my mom's eyelids, scratching and miaowing, doing anything she could to wake her up," Jose later told reporters. The warning worked: Jose made it to a nearby hospital and his life was saved. And, in a historic first, the Illinois government honoured Bart for her "ingenuity and persistence" in the rescue.
Amazing? Yes. But no more remarkable than the many exceptional cats profiled in the Nature program Extraordinary Cats. From Sooty , the English cat who found his way over 100 miles back home, to Scarlett , who risked her own life to save her five kittens from a burning building, Extraordinary Cats profiles the incredible exploits that even the most complacent fat cat can perform. It also highlights the remarkable bonds that people have forged with these once wild creatures, from convicts who find a second chance by grooming their silky fur to psychologists who try to help cats from driving their owners crazy.
Cats and people have a relationship that goes back a long way. Scholars believe that people first welcomed cats into their homes in North Africa more than 2,500 years ago. The partnership was born out of mutual benefit: people welcomed the cats because they killed the mice and rats that threatened to eat their hoards of grain; the cats, in turn, got shelter and a stable food supply.

State Law Summary

All states have laws regarding the keeping of non-domestic animals. Here you will find a summary of state laws that regulate Possession of Wild Felines in Captivity. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is accurate, and appropriate contact information has been included for each state. Please note: This list does not include city or county regulations.
Federal Laws

Many states and individual counties require a USDA license (usually a Class C Exhibitor's license) as a prerequisite for gaining a permit to possess wild felines. The following explanation may clarify this requirement to those considering applying for a USDA licenses to possess wild felines for commercial purposes.
The FCF Model Regulations

This document represents over a year of group efforts to research and develop a useful model that can be presented to state legislatures, Game and Fish offices or if slightly modified, even county governments, as a blueprint and guideline to allow private participation in captive husbandry of wild felines. This document addresses the needs of the animal as well as the safety of the public. The Purpose of the Model Regulations Model Regulations (HTML) Model Regulations (PDF) Model Regulations (MS Word) ... The Problems with Bans FCF supports responsible private ownership and is against animal abuse and sub-standard facilities. Banning the good owners and the conservation role they play, along with those who are not providing for the felines or the safety of the public properly, does more harm then good. FCF encourages that all owners be educated prior to taking on their responsibility to house and provide for exotic felines and asks that those of us with experience act as mentors to aid future responsible care givers and discourage those who's lifestyles are not suitable for such endeavors.

This is the page of all felines Tiger: Please click here to go to a terriffic site just about tigers! Info; Tigers are the biggest cats in the world. They live in steamy hot jungles as well as icy cold forests. There are five different kinds or subspecies of tiger alive in the world today. These tigers are called Siberian, South China, Indochinese, Bengal, and Sumatran. Their Latin name is Panthera tigris. Tigers are an endangered species; only about 5,000 to 7,400 tigers are left in the wild. Three tiger subspecies, the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers have become extinct in the past 70 years. The size of a tiger's territory depends on the amount of food available, and usually ranges from about 10 to 30 square miles (26-78 sq. km). Siberian tigers sometimes have really big territories (as large as 120 square miles). Although tigers usually live alone, tiger territories can overlap. A male tiger's territory usually overlaps those of several female tigers. Wild tigers can eat as much as 40 pounds of meat at one time. After eating a lot, they often do not eat again for several days. Over much of the tiger's broad geographic range, wild pig, wild cattle and several species of deer are its major prey. Unlike wild tigers which kill their prey and then gorge, tigers that live in zoos eat a prepared diet of horse meat and vitamins daily. They may eat as much as 10 pounds of meat per day. Leopard: Info: The diet of leopards consists largely of smaller animals, with gazelles and antelope generally being the largest catches, as leopards lack the size to regularly bring down a zebra.

Since 1997 the Great Cat concept has been cast about among a selected group of existing like minded sanctuaries. As working relations developed between existing sites the Great Cat Concept was conceived. Great Cats in Crisis is the solution to the problems facing the great cats caught in the crisis. Great Cats in Crisis, Inc. is an international federation of wildlife preserves that started with American Wildlife Sanctuaries™ working together under a national non-profit corporation ( 501-C-3 Pending ). The group expanded one year after conception to include International Wildlife Sanctuaries™ in both Guam and South Africa. Our main goal is the creation of a closed gated community by establishing multiple satellite sites around the globe. This is possible through the Great Cat Management School. Great Cats equips each of these Living Resorts™ with resources to meet their operational needs.

    http://www.thunderboomerbengals.ca/aboutbengals.html
Bengal cats are a fairly new breed of domestic cat, which originated from the breeding of a wild Asian Leopard Cat to an Egyptian Mau, Abyssinian, or other domestic shorthaired breed. This type of breeding was done in attempt to create a smaller version of the beautiful wild cats of the jungle, while maintaining an even, dependable temperament suitable for a family pet. The wild Asian Leopard cats also appeared to have a natural immunity to feline leukemia, which gave rise to some further experimental breeding, done in the hope that some significant component of this immunity could be applied to the human leukemia research programs. Asian Leopard Cats display beautiful spotted coat patterns in various colors, depicting the area of their origin. Warmer areas produce darker, more brownish colors, while cooler regions produce a more reddish brown spotting. These cats are wild animals and are not to be kept as pets. The Bengal cat is four generations or more away from the wild Asian Leopard cats. The first few successive generations of breeding Asian Leopard Cats and domestics are termed filial Bengals and should be owned by knowledgeable experienced breeders. These cats may still possess and exhibit some characteristics of their wild ancestors that would make them unsuitable as family pets. Foundation Breeding programs may include male or female Asian Leopard Cats as the first generation, but any progeny of these breedings will normally consist of only sterile males, while the females will be fertile. From the 4th generation and beyond, all offspring should be fertile.
