EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME Introduction There are specific strategies to utilize in the education of individuals with Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBDs), including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), as well as other types of prenatal drug exposure. The strategies will need to be personalized and adapted over time for the best results for you and the children with whom you work who were prenatally exposed to drugs. The strategies presented can be utilized with children with FAS and other types of prenatal drug exposure. Often these children were not exposed to only one substance, but are multi-drug exposed. Working with these individuals requires TEAM WORK. There is no substitute for it. Bring all individuals who might be working with these children (teachers, administrators, secretaries, janitors, lunchroom and playground aides) into the discussions and trainings. Be sure to work closely with the family. These individuals are "high-maintenance" students. They require a great deal of time, effort, love, and understanding. Working together as a team, with all members on the same page, will produce incredible results. | |
