Wrestling Olympic Gold Medalist Visits Track Team Track Hall of Famer Dave Wottle is known to the Bulldogs as 'Jenny's dad' Feb. 4, 2003 Samford's track and field team was treated to a visit from the winner of one of the best races in Olympic history recently. Dave Wottle was a 22 year old college student-athlete when he won the 800 meters in Munich in 1972. Today, Wottle and his wife, Jan, keep up with the progress of the student-athletes on Samford's track and field team, especially their daughter, freshman Jenny Wottle "The rest of the world knows our guest today as Olympic champion Dave Wottle. We know him as Jenny's dad," said coach Glenn McWaters in his introduction. After a few brief remarks from Mr. Wottle, coach McWaters dimmed the lights and played the race that is known in track and field circles as one of the most competitive ever. Wottle was picked to finish sixth out of eight runners in the final. Right from the start, Wottle fell to the back of the pack. Actually, he was so far behind his goal during the first lap was very modest. "I just wanted to catch up to the back of the pack," said Wottle. "The world was watching on television. I didn't want to finish 50 yards behinds everyone." Little by little, Wottle inched his way back into the race. He moved into sixth place, then into fourth. On the final straightaway, Wottle made his move, crossing the finish line just ahead of the second place runner, who tripped and fell as Wottle scooted by for the win.

The sport, although being far from the most popular in the country participation-wise, has yielded Australia a bountiful medal harvest, since 1988. Since 1964, Australia has won seven Olympic hockey medals, two of them gold. Yet there is also a lingering feeling of underachievement attached to Australian hockey, or more specifically, to Australian medal harvest. Throughout most of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s the Australian men’s team was the best in the world.

UConn Ice Hockey Head Coach Bruce Marshall
In his 14th seasons at the helm of the Connecticut men’s ice hockey program, head coach Bruce Marshall has made strides no other UConn ice hockey coach has made and proven the Huskies worthy of their recent Division I status. In only UConn’s second season as a Division I program and as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Marshall and the Huskies earned their first-ever conference championship, in a 6-1 win over Iona in the 2000 Easton/MAAC Championship game. After posting a 20-10-4 record in the 1998-99 season, the second 20-plus season in the program’s history, the 1999-2000 season added a 19-16-1 record, including winning the MAAC title. Through 14-seasons as head coach, Marshall has led the Huskies to the MAAC Championship Final game, to the semifinals of the MAAC Championship twice, three MAAC quarterfinal games, eight ECAC East tournament berths, four ECAC semifinals and one ECAC championship appearance. Marshall’s career record stands at 214-159-35 (56.7%). Included in Marshall’s 14-seasons at the helm of UConn’s ice hockey program, the Huskies have produced seven All-Americans, eight all-conference members and a MAAC Defensive Rookie of the Year (since the MAAC formed in 1998-99).

The Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians all played variations of the game. Several centuries before Christopher Columbus found his New World, the Aztec Indians were playing it in Central America. The Araucano Indians of Argentina invented a game similar to hockey called Cheuca, believing it would make them better warriors. hockie The modern game we know as hockey - or field hockey, for those distinguishing it from ice hockey - evolved in the British Isles in the 19th century. It was a popular English school game, possibly adapted from the Irish game of hurling. "India won six straight Olympic gold medals while winning 24 consecutive matches between 1924 and 1956, a record likely to stand through the ages. The Indians have won two more gold since then."

    OLYMPIC CHANGES: DOLLARS AND SENSE
    TUESDAY 7/23/96
It's been 10 years since the distinction between "amateur" and "professional" was deleted from the Olympic charter and what has it bought us? Many argue that the advent of professionalism has devalued the Olympic spirit envisioned by the modern event's originator, France's Pierre de Coubertin. De Coubertin believed the modern Olympics should be a pristine, apolitical arena where "amateur" athletes indulge in pure competition and rejoice in the heights of human achievement. The Olympic mystique suggested that anyone could be a contender. Ordinary people dreamed of competing in the Olympics, and the dreams spurred athletic activity all over the world. Now that has changed... Olympic athletes have sponsors, expensive equipment, and the luxury of training full time. Money has changed the look and feel of the Olympics in the second half of the 20th century. July 17, 1996:

Gertrude Ederle is the first woman to swim the English Channel. She breaks the men's record with her time of 14 hours, 31 minutes. Althea Gibson is the first African American tennis player to win the Wimbledon and Forest Hills competitions. Wilma Rudolph, a black woman who survived childhood polio, wins three Olympic gold medals in track competition. As a result, many girls and women are attracted to track and field events. Title IX becomes law and prohibits gender discrimination in schools and colleges that receive federal funding. As a result, more opportunities open for girls and women to participate in sports.

The Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta came to a close Sunday night, after two weeks of athletic competition between 197 countries and over 11,000 athletes the most ever in an Olympic Games. The Games closed with International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch praising the city of Atlanta, but notably failing to call the game as "the greatest in Olympic history" a phrase that has become routine in his Closing Ceremonies speeches.

Harrison took charge of the contest in the opening round and increased his advantage in every subesquent round, winning by a 30-16 point decision. But despite the convincing nature of his performance, it was revealed shortly before the bout that the 28-year-old Englishman was suffering from an injured knuckle in his left hand. But he was able to dominate the battle using his right jab and through a debilitating body attack which took its effect on the Kazakhstan fighter during the final round. Harrison started slowly and actually found himself two points down after the first minute of the contest.
