Olympic Field Hockey Medalists
History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980. In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984. In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game. The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance. Top of page

As Olympic gold medal defenders and reigning world champions, the Dutch men's hockey team is the favorite to take gold at Sydney this year, as long as they don't become too overconfident. "Four years ago we were a favorite, but now we are the big favorite because we are the Olympic Champion and World Cup holder," says striker Teun de Nooijer. "Everybody is looking at us, so there will be more pressure that four years ago. But I am confident. We train a lot and hard. We will be fit. What more can we do?" Earlier this year, the Dutch took the third most important competition in the hockey calendar, the Champions Trophy. And 10 of the 11 core players were on the gold medal team in Atlanta. Is another gold medal a foregone conclusion?

The Netherlands and Australia finished scoreless after 70 minutes of regulation time and 15 minutes of extra time, and the Dutch won the shootout 5-4 when Dutch goalkeeper Ronald Jansen made a diving save on Brent Livermore's penalty flick. South Korea advanced to Saturday's final with a 1-0 semifinal victory against three-time gold medalist Pakistan. Coming into the Olympics as field hockey's winner of the World Cup, Olympics and Champions Trophy, the Netherlands was on the verge of being eliminated until Britain's victory against three-time gold medalist Germany clinched it a place in the semifinals on the basis of a better goal differential. USOC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVES SIX MORE NCAA/USOC CONFERENCE GRANTS FOR SIX OLYMPIC SPORTS Posted On:
September 08, 1998 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The United States Olympic Committee's Executive Committee, in conjunction with the NCAA Conference Grants Committee, has approved six first-time or supplemental grants to aid NCAA conferences and associations with funding for Olympic sports. The grants are part of the USOC's $8 million, four-year pilot program which was begun last year. The total amount awarded from this year's grant totals more than $1.15 million and will aid five conferences or associations nationwide. The different entities receiving first-time or supplemental grants include the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Eastern Wrestling League, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the National Women's Collegiate Hockey Association, Of these five conferences, the first three (ECAC, EWL, MIAC) were among the initial recipients last June, when 13 grants involving 11 Olympic sports were awarded, totaling more than $5 million, and they had requested additional funding from the supplemental pool. This year's grants range from $45,000, for adding a women's hockey program at Bethel (Minn.) College to the MIAC, to $400,000 for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation to enhance the men's gymnastics programs in that group.

From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

Karen Shelton Position:
Head Coach
It took just one visit to Chapel Hill, more than two decades ago, to convince Karen Shelton that she never wanted to leave. “When I saw the campus and the facilities and met the team,” Shelton says, “I knew I could build a program here.” Shelton took over in 1981 and has led the Tar Heels to national prominence, in addition to four NCAA Championships, six NCAA runner-up finishes, 14 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 20 consecutive winning seasons. With a 3-1 victory over Wake Forest on Oct. 27, 1998, Shelton notched the 300th win of her career, all at UNC. She hit the 350-win mark on Oct. 25, 2001, when the Tar Heels earned a 3-0 win over Virginia. After 21 seasons in Chapel Hill, Shelton’s career record stands at 351-90-9, a winning percentage of .790. She has been named National Coach of the Year three times (1994-96) and ACC Coach of the Year six times. “Karen has built a program our school is very proud of, both for the team’s success on the field and for the way it represents our university,” says UNC athletic director Dick Baddour. Not only has she built a strong program, she was a driving force behind construction of Francis E. Henry Stadium, which was dedicated as the home of the Tar Heels in the spring of 1999. With a capacity of 1,086, Henry Stadium also includes meeting rooms and locker rooms, and is one of the finest facilities of its kind.
