  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon Debut Sport: Trampoline Individual: Men Only Individual: Women Only ... Featured Competition: Rowing

  • By Pamela Rice Hahn
It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz link No; gotta weigh in on vince's side here - olympic soccer is just silly. In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed a revival of the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games were born. Host Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympic Summer Games in 1896 The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Norway has won the most medals (239) at the Winter Games. The United States has won more medals (2,019) at the Summer Games than any other country. every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Up until 1986 the Olympics were held every four years. Since then, the Winter and Summer games have alternated every two years. The first Olympics covered by U.S. television was the 1960 Summer Games in Rome by CBS. No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted a Winter Games.

    Origin of Sports OBJECTIVE
Students will learn in which country a sport originated, where the country is located, and which animal could be considered an Olympian in that sport. MATERIALS
    • world map
      research materials
    BACKGROUND
Some sports originate in one country while others are a combination of several sports stemming from different countries. Olympic sports that can be traced to one country include soccer and hockey (Great Britain), basketball and volleyball (U.S.A.), fencing (Egypt), judo (Japan), and shooting (Switzerland). Olympic handball is a combination of games from three countries: Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Denmark. ACTION 2. Have students research their sport, finding a description of the sport and its country of origin. Students who chose the same sport may work in groups, deciding among themselves how the research should be divided. 3. Hang a world map on the wall. On the map, ask each student or group to label the country in which their sport originated, and describe the sport to their classmates. DEEPER DEPTHS
Have students research an animal that would qualify as an animal Olympian in their chosen sport. Using the Olympic Animal Athlete cards as an example, have them create their own card that can be copied and shared with classmates.
