Field Hockey Team misses chance for Sydney

The Canadian women's field hockey team probably had bad dreams about the goals that got away. The team missed several terrific opportunities to score, including a gaping corner, during their crucial game against Team USA yesterday which ended in a 1-0 loss. - July 28, 1999 Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980.

ALEXANDRIA, VA., Aug. 28, 1996 Fond memories of "cannonballing" into the lake and playing sandlot baseball games with the neighborhood kids waft through our minds of summers past. Nowadays, kids are involved in more sedate activities, like browsing the Web or channel surfing the TV, as ways to pass the dog days of summer. With school bells ringing once again, however, kids need to be involved in more active pastimes than dodging detention. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is urging children of all ages to show their school spirit by joining a team sport not only for its exercise benefits, but to develop healthy habits that will continue throughout their lives. For many children, team sports like field hockey, soccer, and basketball enable them to stay physically active on a regular basis. The current trend of adolescents toward a more sedentary lifestyle could contribute to such future health problems as heart disease. And there are psychological as well as physical benefits to keeping fit. Building self-esteem and camaraderie and developing problem-solving skills in a team setting are a few of the bonuses kids receive through team sports.

Talgat Tadjuddin Draws Blunt Saber and Declares Jihad to USA
Although Tadjuddin is used to be supported by the Russian Orthodox Church in the hours of need, this time he was refused any kind of support

The last week in Russia's Moslem community was marked with a scandalous trick of the so-called high mufti, the head of the Central Spiritual Moslem department, sheikh Talgat Tadjuddin that he played at a meeting held by the United Russia party in the city of Ufa. When the party gave the sheikh permission to speak at the meeting, he drew a large saber (as it turned out later, it was blunt), waved it in the air and declared jihad against the USA. Then he explained everything in detail to journalists

    Coaches flock to Florida
Two field hockey coaches have something in common with the Super Bowl's MVPs. Old Dominion's Beth Anders, who won her ninth Division I championship last weekend, and Lock Haven's Pat Rudy, who won her first Division II title two weeks ago, are going to Florida. They won't be meeting Mickey or climbing Space Mountain. They'll pick up their sticks and take part in the United States Field Hockey Association's National Festival. The four-day Festival, which begins Thanksgiving day, draws more than 3000 athletes and 171 teams to the Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington for an event that combines fun, fierce competition and recruiting. Anders and Rudy compete in the Women's Open Division where U.S. Olympians and former national team members plus current college All-Americans conduct a fierce battle for bragging rights. The Anders-Rudy combination is part of a Red Rose team which also includes Lebanon Valley coach Kathy Tierney.

Australia, which earned an automatic entry as the host nation, won women's gold medals in 1988 and 1996. South Korea, Argentina, the Netherlands and Germany are expected to challenge in the 10-team competition. Australia is also a top contender in the 12-team men's field. The finer points
Format: Field hockey is similar to soccer. A game consists of two 35-minute halves, with 11 players on each team, and the playing area is roughly the size of a football field. Each goal is 12 feet wide and seven feet high. Players may shoot for goal only from the shooting circle, which is placed 16 yards from the goal, and the goalkeeper may use any part of the body to stop a shot. Twelve men's teams and 10 women's will participate in pool play with the top three teams advancing to the medal round. Equipment: Each player is armed with hardwood sticks that resemble hockey sticks, though smaller. The stick is flat on one side and rounded on the other, and only the flat side may be used to hit the ball, which weighs about 5½ ounces and is slightly larger than a baseball. Players wear shin guards. The goalkeeper wears a face mask and heavy padding.
