There are 330 pieces of land big enough to be called islands scattered across 200,000 square miles of ocean, and several thousand others considered too small for human habitation. Of the 330 islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu make up 85% of the total land mass, and only just over 100 of the islands are actually inhabited. The larger islands are mainly of volcanic origin with high rugged terrain. The smaller islands are coral, limestone, or sand cays, with small pockets of tropical vegetation. Many islands have surrounding coral reefs and lagoons.

Fiji lies in the heart of the Pacific Ocean midway between the equator and the South Pole, and between longitudes 175 and 178 west and latitudes 15 and 22 south. Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone covers about 1.3 million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji has two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Other main islands are Taveuni, Kadavu, Gau and Koro. Eighty three percent of the land is owned by indigenous Fijians while 9 percent is state owned land and eight percent is freehold land. Only 16 percent of Fiji’s land mass is suitable for agriculture and are found mainly along the coastal plains, river deltas, and valleys. Fiji’s capital is Suva and it is one of two cities in Fiji. The other is Lautoka and both are located on Viti Levu.

The changing landscape with its black volcanic and white coral beaches seems like a huge tropical playground. Fiji has soft and colorful beaches, dramatic waterfalls, green volcanic mountains, lush jungles and picturesque coral reefs.
It consists of 18,376 square kilometers of land and includes about 330 islands, of which about 100 are inhabited. The two largest islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Other islands can be divided into the Lomaiviti group, the Kadavu and the Lau group. A smaller cluster of islands, home to many popular resorts, is the Mamanuca Group just offshore from Viti Levu's west coast.
The Fiji islands lie in the southwest Pacific Ocean 2797 kilometers northeast of Sydney and 1848 km north of Auckland. Fiji lies between the equator and the tropic of Capricorn. The 180th meridian passes directly through the archipelago. This line divides the world into today (western side) and tomorrow (eastern side).

Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian. Fiji has been a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world.
