Fiji's flag flew for the first time on Independence Day, October 10, 1970. It includes the red, white and blue Union Flag of Britain in the top left-hand corner and the shield from the Fiji Coat of Arms on a light blue background in the fly. The design for the national flag was selected as the result of a competition won jointly by Mr. Robi Wilcock and Mrs. Murray MacKenzie. Coat of Arms
Fiji's national Coat of arms consists of the images of two Fijian warriors on either side of a shield and the motto "Rerevaka na Kalou ka Doka na Tui" below the shield. These words mean "Fear God and honour the Queen." The shield from the coat of arms has the image of a heraldic lion holding a cocoa pod across the top. Sugarcane, a coconut palm and bunch of bananas are represented in three of the sheilds sections. The fourth contains the reproduction of a dove of peace, the main feature, of the Cakobau Government's flag before cession. The Tabua
The tabua a whale's tooth, is much prized in Fijian tradition. It takes precedence over everything else and occupies first place in Fijian ceremony, whether for family, intertribal or state occasions. It is regarded as a sacred bond between two parties. It is used as a symbol of peace and disputes or quarrels can be smoother over by its presentation.

George Speight is threatening to stir up more unrest
Rebel leader George Speight says he has not adequately been consulted in the formulation of Fiji's new government and its swearing-in has been indefinitely postponed. Mr Speight said the new President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, had promised he would be included in negotiations, but he had not approved the cabinet list announced on Tuesday.

Earier the acting prime minister said the swearing-in had not taken place because President Iloilo was too ill to attend, but a rebel spokesman said the ceremony had been deferred to allow for further talks over the make-up of the new government. Fiji's new president has already been sworn in Fiji is "verging on a civil war," said the spokesman, Joe Nata.

  • David Robie's commentary SUVA, Fiji Islands (PMW): The Fiji Government has attacked "media hysteria" by the local and foreign-owned news media, accusing Rupert Murdoch's Fiji Times of "fanning the fires of sedition and racism". In an eight-page advertisement in the Fiji Sun of 30 October 1999, headlined "Government responds to media hysteria", the Government continued the latest tirade against news media sparked off by Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry at this week's launching of a new self-regulatory industry code of ethics. The Fiji Sun also published its own editorial overview and reaction on the issue of media credibility and the Fiji Times published Chaudhry's speech in full - the first newspaper to do so independently. The Government's advertisement also carried the speech text and documents purportedly showing how the Fiji Times "distorted and doctored" a report about alleged security threats to members of Parliament.

Fiji's President Josefa Iloilo has sworn in a new government two months after an attempted coup led to the ousting of the previous democratic regime. The new cabinet is similar in line up to one announced last week, except for the removal of three men closely associated with rebel leader George Speight, who overthrew the government in May.
The lawlessness that has swept the country must stop PM Laisenia Qarase The rebels had threatened trouble unless more of their supporters were named as part of government, including a replacement for Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, whose appointment had already been announced. The swearing in ceremony was held amid tight security as the Fijian military remained on alert following the sporadic violence that accompanied the arrest of Mr Speight.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... FIJI Fiji's system of parliamentary democracy, inherited when the country gained independence from Great Britain in 1970, was interrupted in 1987 with the installation of a military regime following two bloodless coups led by then-Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka. Fiji returned to elected government in 1992. That government fell in November 1993 over failure to pass a budget for 1994. After a general election in February 1994, the government of Prime Minister Rabuka was returned to power.
In 1995 the Rabuka government initiated a constitutionally mandated review of the Fiji constitution, resulting in the signing into law of a new broadly accepted constitution which came into effect in July 1998. All major political parties participated in the review process and the new constitution is the result of consultation and consensus among the people of Fiji. The review process has helped restore confidence in the political and economic stability of the country.
Elections held under the new constitution in May 1999 resulted in a surprise Labor party victory, the installation of a "People's Coalition" led by an Indo-Fijian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry. The elections were conducted freely and fairly, and led to a peaceful transition of power.

  • Legal Literacy. There is a tendency for laws to be written in a language and style that makes them virtually beyond the understanding of "ordinary" people. Women are adversely affected by this as they have less access to news and information about the legislation. To compound the the problem, there are very few people who are equipped with the knowledge and information to be able to tell the women and the community at large about these laws.

government, the national anthem, and the national
symbols of the Republic of Fiji. We welcome you to
view and listen as you learn more about this
beautiful South Pacific island paradise. Some useful information about the Republic of Fiji The Republic of Fiji was ruled by the British crown up until 1970, when it obtained its
independence on October 10 of that year, although it's legal system is still based on the
British system. The national capital of Fiji is Suva, located on the largest of the 330
islands that comprise the Republic of Fiji, Viti Levu.
Fiji is endowed with forest, mineral, and fish resources, and is one of the most developed
of the Pacific island economies. Sugar exports and tourism are the major sources of
foreign exchange. Sugar processing makes up one-third of industrial activity, but tourism is the number one industry with roughly 250,000 tourists visiting Fiji each year. Growth in 1994 of 5% was largely attributable to increased tourism and expansion in the manufacturing sector.

USP journalism programme Civilian gunmen leader George Speight today defied mounting international condemnation of the kidnapping of Fiji's elected cabinet, claiming that his regime was now the legal government of the Pacific nation. His self-styled interim government named a list of "advisers" last night but at least three of them denied any involvement on national radio and condemned the attempted coup. Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, the country's first Indo-Fijian prime minister whose Fiji Labour Party was swept to a landslide victory in last year's general election, his cabinet, and MPs have been detained under armed guard in Parliament since yesterday morning. While the police and military forces appeared loyal to constitutional authority, Speight, a shaved-head timber industry businessman and undischarged bankrupt, claimed that indigenous Fijians supported the illegal regime.
